Have a question on HCR
I'm pretty sure DUers have better info than elsewhere on the internets...

Didn't HCR make it illegal for insurance companies to drop you because of illness?

I'm asking, because I have a family member who is suspected of having Huntington's disease. They were going to test him for it, but he had to first sign a paper that if the result was positive his insurance might drop him.

This doesn't sound right to me.

Anybody know about this?

1. Problem is that some options from HCR don't kick in until later. Currently if you have a
pre-existing condition, the states/federal government have to off a plan for you at rates comparable without an pre-existing condition

Problem is before you qualify for that, you must be without insurance for 6 months, and have been refused coverage

the healthcare.gov website is helpful.

http://www.hhs.gov/
If you contact the department of health and humans services, they can help you or direct you where to get help.
There also have been agencies set up within each state to help the consumer get the right info.

So start there.

My husband and I are moving off Cobra and because we've had continuous coverage, we will have to go into the private market or use our state insurance pool.
We'll be on this till 2014 or one of us gets a job with major medical. due to the law changes, because we've had continuous coverage, we can still get it.
