House takes up measure to restrict abortions

House Republicans are taking a brief detour from talk of deficits and deregulation on Thursday to take up a bill aimed at restricting access to abortions, a matter critically important to the party's base.

The House is slated to vote on the Protect Life Act, which would amend the new healthcare law to prevent federal subsidies from being used to pay for any health insurance plan that covers abortion. The bill also offers legal protection for hospitals that refuse to perform abortions.

3. No doubt they will find money for that
by reducing funds for Medicaid and Medicare.

6. As I wrote to my Congressman on this
What about protecting MY life? I had a tubal pregnancy. If I had been refused an "abortion" by a hospital, my husband wouldn't have a wife, my daughter would have been motherless, and eat this one stupid people, my younger daughter would never have been BORN. So you have TWO living people to replace ONE dead one. I cannot be these people. They cannot see the forest for the trees.

9. That bill is much worse than restricting insurance plans from including abortion. It will prevent
hospitals from providing emergency abortions to women to save their lives!

11. Hah, "Protect Life" Act
It's like the fucking Ministry of Love from 1984. Exact opposite of what it really does.

14. The "Let Women Die" bill
Rep. Jackie Speier (D-Calif.) on Thursday charged House Republicans of misogynous motives in bringing up a bill that seeks to limit federal funding for abortion.

“What my colleagues on the other side of the aisle are attempting to do is misogynist,” Speier said on the House floor. “It is absolutely misogynist.”

“This bill goes to the farthest extreme in trying to take women down, not just a peg, but to take in shackles to some cave somewhere,” Speier said. “Basically what this bill would do is say that any hospital could decline to provide services to one class of people in this country, and that one class of people are pregnant women.”
