14. Direct Action Working Group Statement on Cleanup - "We have no intention of leaving"
Edited on Thu Oct-13-11 09:09 PM by Hissyspit
http://pastebin.com/hH6NESNu

Brookfield property group has informed Occupy Wall Street of their intent to “clean” Liberty Square, our home and community. OWS views this as an attempt to evict over 500 peaceful and nonviolent protesters form Liberty Square, a tactic used to evict occupations in Austin, TX, Barcelona, Spain, and Bloombergville, NY.

OWS is a highly organized community with a sanitation working group that works tirelessly to keep our plaza clean. In a show of good will, OWS organized a full day of cleaning on Thursday, 13 October 2011 in response to Brookfield’s concerns.

We have no intention of leaving our park. We have spent weeks building a strong community of mutual aid and empowerment. The city government has brutalized and intimidated us and the media has attempted to censor and belittle our message. Despite these challenges, our message has been heard by millions around the world, and they are taking up the call to action by occupying spaces in their communities and opening them up to practice direct, horizontal, non-hierarchical democracy.

OWS invites Brookfield property group to re-clean Liberty Plaza in 1/3 increments starting at 7am as they have proposed. We will maintain physical presence in two thirds of our plaza at all times while they re-clean.

The possibility of eviction doesn’t simply threaten the immediate occupiers of Liberty Square. As a symbolic home to the growing movement against global injustice, any attempt to evict Liberty Square will be met with strong resistance by occupiers, community groups, local unions and organized labor, as well as individual supporters world wide.

Occupy Everything.

At least 10 cops on motorbikes drove north on bway into the protesters beeping their horns.Standoff between marchers heading south and cops going north.

Our Sarah Feinsmith reports from Zuccotti Park: "They are playing the tambourine and singing 'Let's get together and feel all right' and 'Can't Buy Me Love.' Here, Kevin and Nadette of the Peace Museum embrace in a tree hugging and kissing happiness ceremony."

7:34 AM Matthew Lysiak

The marchers have swelled again in number. They are now on Broadway and Fulton. They are staying on the sidewalk. "Whose streets? Our streets!" they chant.

7:27 AM Erik Badia

Looks like the NYPD is mobilizing some extra muscle in the form of cops on scooters, seen here in this picture on the north side of the park at the corner of Liberty st and Broadway. Behind that gang of New York's two-wheeled finest is a large NYPD flatbed truck with metal barriers piled in the back.

7:19 AM Christina Boyle

A brass band has now paraded through the Occupy Wall Street masses in Zuccotti Park and is entertaining the crowds at the steps nearest Broadway. One man next to me is holding his broom aloft and rattling a tambourine. Others are dancing. The trumpet player has a sign on her instrument saying: "class war".

7:17 AM Erik Badia
Crowd here is wild and there are tons of signs, songs, chants and hugs going around, as you can see in the picture.

7:11 AM Matthew Lysiak
The marchers are now circling back around to the square in hopes of getting more people to join.

8:09 AM Matthew Lysiak
Protestors moved right past City Hall and are now moving back to the square. It's looks like their number has swelled to around five hundred people.

6. In my humble opinion, the new rules is INVALID.
Because the owners of Zuccotti Park wants to change the rules in the middle of the game.

Any sane judge will give a permanent injunction against Brookfield Properties for attempting to change the rules in the middle of the game in a guise of "cleaning up".

I am glad to hear that there will be a human chain, and even more people are crowding the park, making it nearly impossible for the police to arrest them all. As a matter of fact, there should be an appeal to the police union to defy the orders of Mayor Bloomberg and Chief Kelly by standing with them.

I wish the Patriot Guards was there with their motorcycles on making sure that the cops are held in bay in a failed effort to evict the park.

As long as #OccupyWallStreet keeps the park clean (and they have) - what is the point of wasting taxpayer's money to do that? I would force Mayor Bloomberg to tender his resignation effective immediately and have a PROGRESSIVE mayor to take over, and revoke the charter of Brookfield Properties, permanently.

Oh well, one can dream, can they?

7. Let them remain PACKED and spread out even more. Civil disobdience is a VERY good thing
and the cops won't find any place to put these arrestees because Riker's and Tombs are already maxed out.

And a big, fat class-action lawsuit against the Mayor and the City of New York, as well as Brookfield Properties, should be initiated.

AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka On Occupy Wall Street and Mayor Bloomberg

(The following is a statement by AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka on October 13, 2011)

Mayor Bloomberg runs the risk of standing on the wrong side of history tomorrow. It is clear that what is being threatened in Zuccotti Park is nothing but silencing the voices and stomping out the rights of Americans. Participants in Occupy Wall Street are now in their fourth week of declaring that “we are the 99 percent” because our system is desperately, decisively out of whack—the top one percent is pocketing massive profits and dominating our politics while everyone else struggles to make ends meet. It is shocking that Mayor Bloomberg feels like that’s a message that needs to be silenced. The AFL-CIO stands with Occupy Wall Street and the 99 percent of Americans just trying to level the massively unequal playing field.

Letter to Zuccotti Park Owner from #OccupyWallStreet Legal Working Group
By: Kevin Gosztola Thursday October 13, 2011 10:16 pm

The following is a letter from the Liberty Park Working Group to the CEO of Brookfield Properties informing the CEO that using the police to “evict” occupiers from Zuccotti Park early in the morning on October 14 raises First Amendment and other legal concerns. It asserts the police action against the occupiers requires “prior court approval.”

The letter is an attempt by the lawyers to convey to the park owner, Brookfield Properties, that the Sanitation Working Group has taken measures to clean the park and is willing to meet to further negotiate what must be done to take care of the park properly.

Lawyers signed on are affiliated with the Center for Constitutional Rights. Margaret Ratner Kunstler, wife of the late radical lawyer William Kunstler, is one of the lawyers representing the occupiers.

54. Wall Street Protesters Confront Bloomberg While He Dines at Top Restaurant, Leaves by Back Door
As he dined at downtown's posh Cipriani restaurant, having endorsed a 7am clean-up of the 'unsanitary' Occupy Wall Street encampment, protesters attempted to deliver the mayor a petition with 310,000 signatures supporting the their right to remain in the park. But the mayor refused to come out of the restaurant, instead making his exit out of a back door.

New York City officials earlier ordered Wall Street protesters to clear their sleeping bags and tarps from the park where they started a movement that has spread around the globe and forced CEOs and presidential candidates to take notice.

But demonstrators said they wouldn't be going anywhere on Friday morning, setting the stage for a showdown with police.

NYC official: Protest cleanup is being postponed

By KAREN MATTHEWS
Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) -- The cleanup of a plaza in lower Manhattan where protesters have been camped out for a month was postponed early Friday, sending cheers up from a crowd that had feared the effort was merely a pretext to evict them.

Deputy Mayor Cas Holloway said the owners of the private park, Brookfield Office Properties, had put off the cleaning, scheduled for 7 a.m. More than hour beforehand, supporters of the protesters had started streaming into the park, creating a crowd of several hundred chanting people.

A confrontation between police and protesters, who had vowed to stay put through civil disobedience, had been feared. Boisterous cheers floated up from the crowds as the announcement of the postponement circulated, and protesters began polling each other on whether to make an immediate march to Wall Street, a few blocks away.

"Late last night, we received notice from the owners of Zuccotti Park - Brookfield Properties - that they are postponing their scheduled cleaning of the park, and for the time being withdrawing their request from earlier in the week for police assistance during their cleaning operation," the deputy mayor's statement said.

- snip -

The company's rules, which haven't been enforced, have been this all along: No tarps, no sleeping bags, no storing personal property on the ground. The park is privately owned but is required to be open to the public 24 hours per day.

7:05 Splinter group is marching. Trouble looms? NY ACLU tweets: " legal observers shadow the march on opposite side of sidewalk, kep an eye out, nypd is unprepared, things may turn chaotic." ... @Ghostpickles view: "We win the day... Now its time to go home for a day and fucking sleep.".... Keith Olbermann warns: "Beware, #OWS - 'postponement' of cleaning w/o time, date, or full agreement could mean later unannounced action. Keep vigilant."

6:55 March does begin....Allison KIlkenny raises point: "Questions remain: will protesters be permitted to bring sleeping gear into the park, sleep on the ground, etc.?" Yes, it's possible pending eviction postponed but police could try to enforce the new Brookfiled rules.... Reportedly some crying in park, emotional reaction after expecting to be arrested. ...Russell Simmons, supportive one-percenter, arrives and tweets: "I am part of the 100%. Isolation is sickness!!"

73. Councilman Williams: "I was coming down here to defend Occupy Wall Street, but I'm excited that"
8:02 AMErik Badia
Just spoke to New York City Councilman Jumaane D. Williams, who represents the 45th District in Brooklyn, who said the postponement of the cleanup is a big win for our city and our country.

"I'm excited," Williams said, "I was coming down here to help defend Occupy Wall Street, but I'm excited that were here to celebrate a victory for democracy," he said.

Councilman Williams said this the protesters, who he called a 'movement' should take a moment to enjoy their success, but should keep on pressing forward.

"Now we take a second to celebrate the victory," Williams said, "This is a victory in the battle but the war still continues, we need to start with the movement again."

http://live.nydailynews.com/Event/Occupy_Wall_Street_Showdown_at_Zuccotti_Park

8:57 AM Erik Badia
At the corner of Maiden and Water Streets I spoke to a National Lawyer's Guild observer who said she watched a video of a police motorcycle run over another Lawyer's Guild observer's leg and then saw with her own eyes that man get pushed to the ground by police, be arrested and get thrown into a police van.

"He's a legal observer with the National Lawyer's Guild, he was observing the protest and he was run over by a police motorcycle," said Zainab Akbar, 31.

Akbar said she watched the entire thing on the video camera of a protester and then watched with her own eyes the end of the incident, with the observer, whom she could only identify as 'Ari,' being arrested and put into the back of a police van.

"His leg was stuck under the bike and he kicked his leg to get the bike off his leg and then the police attacked him and shoved him into the ground and put a knight stick against the back of his neck," Akbar said.

It is unclear what the circumstances of the man being hit by the motorcycle were, but a security guard who was across the street from the intersection where the accident took place said he saw a policeman on a motorcycle fall over. The man said he had an obstructed view and couldn't see exactly what happened.

To be clear, this account is coming from one witness, this has not yet been confirmed by authorities and we have not been able to obtain or watch the video yet.

Street Heat Nation

by Katrina vanden Heuvel
Three years ago, when the banks took down our economy—and people’s homes, savings and lives with it—we wondered, Why aren’t more people out in the streets?
photo: Mike Fleshman

When the banksters were bailed out with no strings attached—no foreclosure relief, no megabank breakups, no controls on exorbitant salaries—we wondered, Why aren’t more people out in the streets?

And finally when those same corporations returned to record profits but hoarded the cash, keeping credit frozen and jobs scarce—we wondered, What will it take for people far and wide to hit the streets?

It took Occupy Wall Street.

The occupation in downtown New York began with shamefully little and mostly derisive media coverage. But now the pundits, the Democratic Party and the guardians of the wealthy elite are scrambling to keep up with it, make sense of it, challenge it, co-opt it.

They can’t. It’s an exploding star...

A protester is seen after an altercation with an NYPD officer. It is unclear whether or not the protester was intentionally run over. (Joe Marino for News)

104. Bloomberg Radio Address:

10:36 AMChristina Boyle
Life in Zuccotti Park is now largely back to normal. Hundreds of people are still hanging out, a boisterous drum circle is playing on the western edge of the plaza, bagels with cream cheese are being served...One Occupy Wall Street protester is drawing up a list of all the upcoming meetings on a chalk board (pictured). On one side is the schedule for workshops, where topics include: "organizing immigrant worker & immigration policy" and "the attack on the public sector".On the reverse is the working group schedule where the committees include kitchen, media, direct action, security and accountability/transparency.

Highlights from Mayor Bloomberg's radio address this morning, via NYDN's Jon Lemire:

"We're going to be monitoring the situation going forward and make no mistake: we will do what's necessary to maintain public health and safety. But there just is a limit to what we can do in a private park. If they want to take a couple of days to work something out, they're welcome to do that.

"I've asked what happens if they can not and the answer I got was that would go ahead and do what they were going to do this morning. From our point of view, I think it would be a little harder at that point in time to provide police protection.

I took a walk through park, night before last. Nice people, everyone wanted to shake your hand, people offered, one guy offered something more than that, I said no thank you. The park is not designed to be a place to sleep. Brookfield has some regulations they will put out they wanted to enforce, they didn't enforce for a while.

The longer this goes on, the worse it is for our economy. You just go down and talk to the stores in the neighborhood - there's one or two selling more pizzas, but most of them say this is hurting.

No one has been a bigger defender of the first amendment than I have. It's one of the great things about America. The city's role is to protect the public health and safety and to enforce the law."
