As someone with ALS pissed local director stole $80,000 from local chapter
The former executive director of the ALS Association of Western Pennsylvania was charged this morning with using nearly $80,000 of the nonprofit group's finances for unauthorized personal gain over at least the past five years.

Michael D. Bernarding, 33, of Tasso Street in Hazelwood is being arraigned this morning on seven counts of theft by unlawful taking and one count of theft by deception -- all felonies -- and eight misdemeanor counts of misapplication of entrusted property and property of government or financial institutions.

A detective with the Allegheny County district attorney's office alleged in an affidavit that Mr. Bernarding gave himself unauthorized raises, wrote checks for unapproved bonuses and used the group's accounts with Staples, Office Depot and Southwest Airlines to buy gift cards.

The affidavit also accuses Mr. Bernarding of helping himself to the group's funds to pay for a variety of other unapproved expenses.

He damn well better not get a slap on the wrist. B*stard! IMHO worse than a bank robber! I wouldn't wish this disease on my worst enemy. Him I might!

1. If you are in the area...
you need to get with the board of directors and make sure.

I wonder how he was given the job?

It also seems strange that it doesn't appear that there was much oversight. Those pesky regulations do seem to get in the way.

3. One thing is for sure, he can't have an excuse...there is no excuse.
A friend of mine has been a patient advocate for nearly 40 years after losing her husband to ALS. She did so at her own expense. She shines brightly next to this creep.

He'll get a slap on the hand. White collar crime, doncha know.
