Lech (Solidarity)Walesa, former Polish president, to visit New York in support of Occupy Wall Street

Source: NY Daily News

By Corky Siemaszko

Solidarity hero Lech Walesa is flying to New York to show his support for the Occupy Wall Street protesters.

"How could I not respond," Walesa told a Polish newspaper Wednesday. "The thousands of people gathered near Wall Street are worried about the fate of their future, the fate of their country. This is something I understand."

A former shipyard worker who led Poland's successful revolt against Soviet communism, Walesa said "capitalism is in crisis" and not just in America.

"This is a worldwide problem," he told the Lublin-based Dziennik Wschodni newspaper. "The Wall Street protesters have focused a magnifying glass on the problem."

4. certainly. Omaha Steve has the link to the entire story..
This needs to go viral, I want the media who has snubbed OWS every way possible to HAVE to report this.
Walesa knows what he's doing, what the OWS is up against and just what it will take to stick to the fight. He understands the 'long haul'.

It damn near brings tears to my eyes to hear this news.
We are up against such an enormous & powerful opposition..Global

3. Lech Walesa, info for anyone not familiar with him:
Lech Wałęsa (Polish: Lech Wałęsa) (Polish: <ˈlɛx vaˈwɛ̃sa> ( listen), English: /ˌlɛk vəˈwɛnsə/ or /wɔːˈlɛnsə/;<1><2> born 29 September 1943) is a Polish politician, trade-union organizer, and human-rights activist. A charismatic leader, he co-founded Solidarity (Solidarność), the Soviet bloc's first independent trade union, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, and served as President of Poland between 1990 and 95.<3>

Wałęsa was an electrician by trade, with no higher education. Soon after beginning work at the Gdańsk (then, "Lenin") Shipyards, he became a trade-union activist. For this he was persecuted by the Polish communist government, placed under surveillance, fired in 1976, and arrested several times. In August 1980 he was instrumental in negotiations that led to the ground-breaking Gdańsk Agreement between striking workers and the government, and he became a co-founder of the Solidarity trade-union movement. Arrested again after martial law was imposed and Solidarity was outlawed, upon release he continued his activism and was prominent in the establishment of the 1989 Round Table Agreement that led to semi-free parliamentary elections in June 1989 and to a Solidarity-led government.

In 1990 he successfully ran for the newly re-established office of President of Poland. He presided over Poland's transformation from a communist to a post-communist state, but his popularity waned. After he narrowly lost the 1995 presidential election, his role in Polish politics was diminished. His international fame remains, however, and he speaks and lectures in Poland and abroad on history and politics.

13. Destiny chose Lec Walesa for LEADER of Occupy the World
Edited on Fri Oct-14-11 02:38 PM by Blaze Diem
his shoulders must be very big
A daunting task.

I believe he may emerge as a central figurehead in this fight.
Who better qualified is there?
Not for just one message, nor a self serving or a corporate bought purpose,
but for the solidarity of 99%, as they unite against the immorality & greed of the remaining 1%
and their domination of an entire planet.

I wish the history books had already been written on this unsettled time, and I wish for a happy ending.
May peacemakers emerge as world leaders

16. Maybe he's coming to level the playing field of capitalism.
Regulate Capitalism and it serves a productive purpose for many.
It was de-regulation that gave us 1 vs 99 per cent.
First we must end the buying of politicians who make the laws that favor the greed of the 'run-amok' 1%.

19. It's good he's lending his support, but in no way could he
be a leader of this movement. I really wish people would respect the wishes of those who started and are continuing this movement so successfully. They have stated over and over again and found it necessary to repeat again this week, the strength of their movement is that it is leaderless, yet everyone leads. Do you see how successful it has been? Probably the fastest growing most successful people's movement every? Why the need for a leader? Walesa led his own movement in his own time.

This is a new movement and a very different time. Three weeks ago people, even here, were predicting it would 'die without leaders' etc. etc. They know what they are doing. And why change a winning strategy??

Having said that, I am very glad that he, and so many other respected and prominent figures have taken the trouble to go visit the protesters and support them. But this movement will eventually have leaders who will emerge FROM the movement, as he did in his time.

28. Regulated capitalism was a historical anomaly.

Those conditions have passed and Capital is back to business as usual.

Teddy Roosevelt regulated capitalism, how long did that last?

FDR regulated capitalism, that lasted a little longer even as it was being undermined, and here we are again.

Time to get off of that merry-go-round, kill capitalism.

56. Agree .... and ....
relative to little else, I've always been suspicious that the Polish Pope

was CIA --

Oddly enough evidently the CIA envied the Vatican intelligence networks --

and maybe enough to want to take them over?

When Pope John XXIII moved Vatican II he was turning the church into a democracy --

quite a threat to elites for whom organized patriarchal religion is an underpinning --

and "Manifest Destiny" and "Man's Dominion Over Nature" a license to steal!

35. He knows that there is no difference between American Republicans and Soviet Communists!
Edited on Sat Oct-15-11 09:56 AM by Joe Bacon
They are exactly the same. Both American Republicans and Soviet Communists believe that a tiny elite should have total control over society.

Ask my friends who fled the Soviet Union, every one of them will tell you that American conservatives act exactly like Soviet Communists. They point out how American megachurches act just like Soviet Communist Party cells. They point out that America has a Soviet type Politburo that controls society. Grover Norquist is the American version of Stalin. His weekly gatherings work the same way as the Soviet Politburo did. They point out that the Soviet Union Communist Party meetings are just like the weekly services held in megachurches where American pulpit pimps speak the same Soviet-type talking points. The only difference between them is two words; when Soviet Communists spoke of Marx, American Conservatives spoke of God and when Soviet Communists spoke of Lenin, American Conservatives speak of Reagan!

38. I'm not for or against Mr. Walesa
as some are further down the thread. I am not in favor of the OWS having a leader. Of people thinking it has a leader. Of being led at all. Without a leader, there is no metaphorical head for the power structure to cut off. As long as this is an affiliation of like minded folks showing dissatisfaction with the way things are, the longer it will last. IMHO :bounce:

the official leader, He already is a leader in his own right. They're are other greats like him. However, he is a welcome show of power & good for galvanizing OWS as the Wall Street bullies try to dismantle their strength. 53. This is wonderful.
Let's see.

We will have one Noble Peace Prize winner, son of college graduates, graduate of a highly ranked university, one time professor, and multiple war monger who is an American President who does nothing but bad mouth his base.

And then we have a Nobel Peace Prize winner who is dock worker and ex political con who pretty much single handedly defeated the USSR in Europe with out so much as a water pistol who does support the liberal base.

Can we hope Obama learns a couple of libraries worth from this man?
