Hunter S. Thompson-” In a nation run by swine"
” In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely.”

BTW Gonzo means the last man standing in Irish bar.

5. I was lucky to meet him
back in the 70s when I lived in Crested Butte Colorado and us hippies use to go to Aspen when it was hip

Now both towns have been taken over by the pigs, as he would say.

He said the election of Bush was the end of the nation and cried his wife reported. He never cried.

A brave man that lived and went out as he chose.

I couldn't agree more. I met him in the early 90's, and was always happy that I had the chance to talk to him in person. He was an amazing human being.

12. He was really a contradiction
I needed to be stoned on something besides alcohol to get him.

13. heh heh heh... yeah, his thought process moved fast, and he made huge jumps in logic
but if you could follow him though those large logical leaps, what he was saying was spot on.

The newspaper I wrote for in the 90's brought him to speak at the university, and we hung out with him after the speech at the hotel. During his speech, I thought it was funny that most people hadn't been expecting what they were getting. I think they expected Bill Murray, or something. You had to listen to him closely, and it seems like most there weren't willing to do that. His message, though, was very clear: (paraphrasing) "The First and Fourth Amendments are being tossed out the window in the name of security, and it's only going to get worse unless we put a stop to it."

14. I think that is why consciousness drugs are illegal
When you are able to see the reality around you
that is dangerous to those that don't want you to see.

BTW........ Obama supports....... oh never mind.

18. That's what I remember--the jumps
He came to speak at USC in the '70s, but there were only about a dozen of us, mostly journalism students, in a small room. I wish I'd recorded it. I know it took some concentration to follow his thought process. :)

20. His comments on the two candidates in 2004 were the best one line summary I have ever heard
Edited on Mon Oct-17-11 05:18 PM by karynnj
He spoke of having known both for over 30 years. Then he said that John Kerry was a brave man with a good heart - and that even Bush's best friends would not say that of him. (paraphrasing from memory)

Actually here is a link to the Independent's covering of Thompson's Rolling Stone endorsement.

(Before I found it, I assumed that the Bush election you were speaking of was 2000 - It obviously wasn't as he was one of those who voted for Nadar. He had a long deep connection to John Kerry. Given that Thompson was not prone to praising many legislators, that says a lot about John Kerry - who is in good stead here with George McGovern. (Both McGovern and Kerry went to his funeral.)

15. Is that "Country Joe" McDonald drinking ginger ale at your pad?
He did a great set at Woodstock. Very cool that you knew these two righteous dudes.

Never met McDonald, but had a road race one night with Hunter up Pacific Coast Highway from south of Big Sur to Monterey in 1982. I was in a borrowed Cadillac and he was in a Camaro. It was an even race. Didn't realize who it was until he pulled over by the side of the road in Monterey.

We started to make some friendly small talk about how evenly matched we were, and then I looked over at him, and said, "You look a lot like Hunter Thompson." Without saying another word, he got back into his car and roared off. That's when I realized how f-cked up it must've been for Hunter to be a celebrity. Saw him a couple more times at book talks and lectures, but sadly never really got a chnace to know him.

16. Yes it is....... we are all victims or the Great Compromise.
I used to sleep at the foot of Old Glory
And awake in the dawn's early light
But much to my surprise
When I opened my eyes
I was a victim of the great compromise

To me these times are a cyclic, just like the Mayans said, with their wheels of time.....lol.........

Energies on the planet are in play now
that have been asleep for awhile.

We shall see.....

I'm just a lucky observer that didn't do anything special.

19. Thompson fans might enjoy this:

Review:
". . . reads like Thompson if he was writing his main body of work today and not 35 years ago. . . . it’s mostly laugh out loud funny."

“By far, the funniest comic novel since Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.”
