This is how you can tell a movement has taken hold
Edited on Sat Oct-15-11 06:21 PM by ThomWV
Taken hold of the public's approval that it.

Here's how you can tell. If the police beat down and arrest one protestor two will be there tomorrow to take her place; like the Hydra if they cut off one head two new ones will appear. Meanwhile in the halls of power around the world political leaders are earnestly hoping it will all go away. In the White House alone three quarters of the staff is praying for bad weathern every American city tomorrow; bet on it.

I sincerely hope the parasites are not able to co-opt the OWS/OTW (Occupy Wall Street/Occupy the World). Particularly the politicians. They will pander until they get their foot in the door and then they will stab you in the back. And when, after failing to produce, they come back and tell you they tried but the other side blocked them at every turn you will know they never tried at all. And the Media, what the hell good are they? Well groomed short-springed Bobble-heads who to a man consider their own good opinion more valuable than fact. They are not to be trusted. The churches and the zealots they produce are not your friends either, in the end they only have one allegiance, and it ain't you.

I sure wish I could get out there with you tomorrow but a tumor keeps me home. Give 'em hell for this old coot while you're there, you have my best wishes

13. From another person who could not attend. ...
I have bad discs pressing on my spinal cord.
But in my heart I was there at the front of the march, holding my sign.
I'm sure there are at least as many of us whose situation keeps us home,
but trying to do our part as best we can.

I hope you get well soon :)

5. I'm guessing the police are getting paid pretty well for their neanderthal
behavior and that money comes from the corporations. Nothing will get in the way of that almighty $$$$.

4. I was at a gathering today in my small city...
Many, many cars honked their horns when they went by us. Even a couple of bus drivers did! The public is on our side. We might not see them at Occupy events, but they're with us, no matter what the media says.

8. I too attended OWS in my very small city
There were not a Lot of folks, but-these little ones are all over my state. We too got, well, 99% supportive honking, w/one guy yelling "This is ALL Obama's Fault"...

9. Glad to hear it.
I think the small town ones are even more effective, since your neighbors who know you realize you're not crazy or overly idealistic. They're very impressive events. Let's keep going!

7. I Don't Worry Much About Co-Opting
I do worry, a little, about complacency. As the media and politicians stroke the protesters and say "Nice kitty, nice kitty," there is a danger that some will believe that the war is over and it's time to get back to life. Especially because in this country we have an almost knee-jerk expectation of quick fixes.

I don't think the possibility is high, except perhaps for a few individuals. But I have a tendency to want to keep driving home the message that it is going to take a long time before we regain our liberties.

And I wish you well, ThomWV.

12. Politics and politicians are part of the problem, and #OWS rejects them.
As it should be.

action of any people trying to incite anything that is violent and seriously law breaking.

16. If there's bad weather tomorrow people will still show up so
Edited on Sat Oct-15-11 10:09 PM by lunatica
half the people in the White House and all 1% on Wall Street will have even more to be concerned about. I believe there is a core group of hearty young people who will stay there the entire winter without a whimper out of them. They're committed because to give up is simply not an acceptable option.

I know if I was in my twenties with such a bleak future before me I would stay. I know I'm stubborn enough. I would probably do my best to stay now, but I'd end up being more of a burden than an asset. My body can't take that kind of harsh treatment for the prolonged period that this would require.

I can certainly show up and take the place of someone who can go home and get a bath and some rest during a few hours during the day.
