I am so proud of San Francisco tonight
I thought we had protest fatigue, especially after that BART nonsense. But oh how we came out in droves today!!!!

And extra pride for SFPD, for putting the needs of the 99% above the needs of inconvenienced motorists.

3. Every time I've ever been in a peaceful protest in SF the cops are great
The motorcycle cops block off streets and then when all the marchers pass they open the streets up again. then when the largest groups of marchers are going home (usually hundreds or even thousands at a time) they drive their motorcycles ahead and stop the traffic on cross streets until the marchers pass. They do this in enough numbers that streets get closed off and opened up all along the route. They're obviously quite organized about it and keep disruptions to traffic to a minimum. I was really impressed when I saw them doing this.

4. I am not sure they even had a permit
They rushed City Hall, but only the steps and entrance, not the inside, and police were telling unsuspecting cars to do u-turns on one-way streets. They seemed prepared for a march to City Hall, but it seemed to have much more improvisation than usual.

5. a letter to the editor of whatever major paper there would be nice
and would probably help KEEP them that way. Might even encourage others police depts to do the same??

7. The SF police tried to close down the OccupySF camp more than once.
They stole all the gear there for no reason at least twice, iirc. There was a video of one of them beating the shit out of one of the protesters that went viral this week.

8. I'm not trying to make them out to be saints by any means
But in the case of what happened recently they were probably ordered to do that because this time it's breaking the law through civil disobedience and it upsets the Big City Hall people and the corporations. In the marches leading up to the Bush wars all was legal. Bush and the corporations and City Hall could just ignore us, which is exactly what they and the media did.

12. You have perfectly described today's experiece
I doubt that the marchers had a permit to overwhelm the City Hall steps, but SFPD was right there with us :)

I took this on the way into the pre-season game this year where 2 people got shot in the parking lot.

So as long as you don't go to a 49ers vs Raiders game you're fine :)
