Emanuel defends increases in water and sewer fees and city stickers for SUVs

Emanuel argued that 47 percent of the cost of rebuilding Chicago’s aging water and sewer system will be born by suburbanites whose towns purchase Lake Michigan water and stand to benefit from the city’s plan to convert four of 12 pumping stations from steam to electricity.

Chicago homeowners will also pay double for water and sewers over the next four years — and $140 million more next year alone, Those are the same homeowners forced to swallow a $180 million property tax increase for the Chicago Public Schools.

Why saddle struggling homeowners with a $320 million burden in one fell swoop?

“Because you have to build over a period of time, and you have to plan, and this creates 18,000 jobs, 1,800-a-year in our neighborhoods throughout the entire city,” the mayor said.

South Side Street Closed Following Water Main Break

A four-block stretch of 47th Street remains closed because a “very big and very old” water pipe that dates back to the 1920s ruptured Saturday morning.

-snip-

The break happened at 8:30 a.m. in the 1300 block of West 47th Street, causing the street to “buckle,’’ and sending a “substantial” amount of water running through alleyways, according to LaPorte.

No one’s water service is affected, however, some residents may have a foot or two of water in their basements in the area, LaPorte said.

The “very big” 24-inch water main dates back from the early 1920s and LaPorte said it may have broken because of its “very old’’ age.

Rahm should address this first before he tries to raise fees, and pay the residents to cover his latest fuck up.
