Can we create a post that highlights the poles of age spectrum? These kinds of images really tug at my heart-strings. Please add your own.

What branch of the military did he serve in: none. He had a doctor's note because he had a boil on his butt.

5. I disagree on involving children...
...I have no problem with children being there and experiencing it with their parents, but I'm sorry - with signs they just put me off. They look exploited (or exploitative) to me, whether they are or not.

DISCLAIMER: And I know the kid in the top photo is one of our own DUers'; and it's great he's there, and he's a great looking boy, and I'm sure the sign was his idea and his artwork, but still - it just doesn't resonate with me.

7. I don't think my son is exploited.
But maybe that is because I was made to distribute political literature door to door in the 70s when my parents helped start a grass roots party to compete with the established machine in our community.

Even if nothing much changes, I should still be able to live out my life in relative comfort and safety; I don't have the same conviction about my son's future. That is why I involve him. So he knows and those watching know what is at stake.

I would like to know what others think.

Campaign and marched with me against the Vietnam War. They have been in it for the long haul. Actually we were a three generation protest family when that was very unusual. My parents marched with us.

and I highly doubt those kids would prefer to be anywhere other than with their parents at these gatherings.

8. I think it is great that kids are there...
I took my kids to several rallies when they were young. They don't really remember them, but they at least know that being active in the community is important and have been as active as they can as adults now (they work and go to school full time so...). Anyway it shows the kids that the adults in their lives are willing to make a stand. The only caveat I can think of is if you spot a police officer move in the other direction, I hate to say it but you can't count on them to restrain themselves even if children are present. I never went to a rally that was anything but peaceful and never witnessed or heard of an incident, but I understand the OWS rallies are a bit different and the police are in some cases bribed with "donations".

16. The Last Line
In the FDR quote is telling: "They are unanimous in their hate for me -- and I welcome their hatred."

The current POTUS welcomes no one's hatred -- and that may well be part of the problem.

22. At Occupy Seattle yesterday
I had the opportunity to chat up and older gentleman. He is 64, his wife and himself have played it by the book for years, but have been sporadically employed for the last decade and are about to lose their house.

Having nothing else to do, he's been there nearly every day.

Slacker bongo-beating hippies, indeed.

40. Kids, protests and politics...
if these same kids were with their parents and holding anti-abortion/pro-life signs outside an abortion clinic, the outrage here would be deafening.

Exploiting, using, placing children in a potentially hairy situation is a cowardly defensive maneuver meant to make the bad guys look even worse if a child is harmed or injured.

If that should happen... who's to blame?

The parents or the police?
