As Mitt Romney’s star keeps rising, a sullen mood envelops conservatives
By Josh Lederman and Alicia M. Cohn - 10/17/11 05:15 AM ET

Pundits and political professionals seem increasingly confident that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney will be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee next year — but conservative skeptics are still not reconciled to that scenario.

Their suspicion of Romney remains strong, for well-known reasons — in short, his shifts of position on social issues and the healthcare reform package he enacted in Massachusetts — and they are insistent that he can yet be vanquished in his bid to become the GOP’s standard-bearer.

snip//

The key problem for conservatives is that none of their would-be tribunes has gained enough traction to emerge as a clear alternative to the former Massachusetts governor. There is no single “un-Romney” candidate.

snip//

Many conservative leaders are still swooning for Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), but her prospects appear to have waned of late. Her poll results have never recovered from their precipitous slide in the wake of Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s entrance into the race.

Perry’s campaign was launched amid enormous media attention and considerable excitement from grassroots activists. He appeared to threaten Romney for several weeks, but weak debate performances and heavy fire from the other contenders have stalled his momentum.

The end result is a sullen mood among many on the right — and a tangible lack of desire to do anything more than pull the lever for Romney, if it comes to that, in November 2012.

1. Well, that plus the fact that you can't sell a corporate raider/serial firer as a Man of the People.
Also, a Home Depot lumber department has more charisma.

Hell, Fred Thompson didn't drop out of the race until January 2008.

4. Watching Mitt take tack to the left of Obama will be a sight to behold.
For reference, see how Mitt debated Ted Kennedy in the '94 Senate election. it's on Youtube and ought to go viral to make sure the base sees it.

Fascinating to think that the "extreme conservative" candidates(read, not Romney) all are unelectable to the sane majority in the GE, but the one Republican candidate who could give Obama a run for his money is probably unacceptable to the extreme conservative base.

So how will they react to his nomination? Unprincipled hypocrites who will shut up and vote Party line? Or no shows at the voting / 3rd Party-bound?

5. Conservatives are getting more sullen? Who could tell?
"Sullen" is their default setting. Conservatives are happiest being sullen, and as carriers, they're even happier when they infect others with sullenness. I think I'll choose happiness, which will make them even more sullen. And therefore happier.

7. The republican base wants someone like Perry. He says Jesus and God a lot, is anti-science,
anti-government, anti-Mormon, anti-intellectual, anti-anything not white and Christian. His ignorant swagger and stupidity work for them. Romney can't beat him and it's a matter of time before the other wackos running support him.

12. A caricature of a politician, a corporate raider, a career destroyer,
and charlatan who takes two diametrically opposed positions on the same subject, who claims that corporations are "people" is nothing to be excited about.
