Reinvented by technology: 6 NYC industries
In May, The Huffington Post reached a milestone: Its traffic for the month surpassed that of The New York Times' website. Such growth by a company that is entirely a creature of the Internet epitomizes the way that technology is disrupting traditional industries.

New York offers unique advantages in the disruption game. Whereas the last wave of innovation was all about the technology itself, these days, it's all about applying it. This development plays to the city's strengths in industries—advertising, media, fashion and financial services—that are moving inexorably into the online world.

Barriers that once favored the West Coast have fallen. Cloud computing, cheap hardware and ubiquitous broadband allow an entrepreneur armed with a laptop, Wi-Fi capability and a table in Bryant Park to build a company; 15 years ago, it would have taken 30 programmers and a lab in Silicon Valley.
