this poll needs DU love -- will the Occupy movement change anything?
http://www.orlandosentinel.com/news/opinion/todaysbuzz/os-todays-buzz-occupy-orlando-protests-101811,0,1809644.story

Specific to Occupy Orlando, which is in it's 4th day of occupation in POURING rain.

The 100+ folks who're standing out in the storm right now can use DU's support, especially as we're starting to deal with increasingly aggressive attacks from the local arm of American's for Prosperity which has targeted Occupy Orlando for counter-demonstration. Every little bit of encouragement means a LOT! You have no idea!

1. Here's the current count:
What do you think?

Will the Occupy Orlando protest and the movement itself change anything?

Yes. Remember, what's now the Tea Party started as some uncoordinated protests. It takes time for a movement to coalesce.

7%

No. This is a ragtag collection of misfits whose protests will soon burn out, and it'll be good riddance.

14%

Yes. Do not misjudge the discontent felt by a wide variety of Americans. This past weekend's march in Orlando is just the beginning.

52%

No. The fact of the matter is that this group doesn't really know what it wants, and that the liberal mindset behind it is on the wane in the United States.

2. Wow! 52% say "Yes. Do not misjudge the discontent felt by a wide variety of Americans."
"This past weekend's march in Orlando is just the beginning."

Can we make that "53%!" ;)

3. "Results are not scientific." They are not mathematically correct either. They
don't add up to 100%.

Will the Occupy Orlando protest and the movement itself change anything?

4. And they're especially not scientific
when one side or another attempts to influence the results by sending people over to skew the results their way.

There's no truly accurate reading when that happens.

IMO, skewing polls is ridiculous and pointless.

8.  It's an internet public opinion poll, Pipi. A way to show support. It can't be "skewed."

It's your complaint that's rather pointless.

16. When people write "Please DU this poll"...
it means, please go over and flood the poll with answers favorable to OUR side.

If it were only about "support", then the percentages wouldn't matter. But people want to bring the percentages up. Or keep them up.

They don't want to see what a majority of people actually THINK about a subject. They just want to play with the numbers because they think an internet poll is going to make a huge difference in the status quo.

Internet poll votes don't fucking matter.

Election votes are what matter.

23. It's pretty apparent
from the replies these things always get.

There's always a big to-do over what the numbers are. People don't seem glad just to have voted.

No...it's always about where the numbers are after they've voted. Like it's some contest they have to win.

whatever.

25. It's no less silly or effectual than posting things in an Internet discussion forum.

Right?

27. i'm sorry you feel this way, b/c the Americans for Prosperity have organized against us in Orlando
you realize that's Koch brothers. and, you realize how "skewed" it is to have that sort of muscle (all the money in the world) lined up against you. all i'm asking is for people who support occupy to give Orlando a little love b/c they're sacrificing every bit of comfort you're enjoying right now in order to hopefully make things better for all of us.

24. I'll bet it would matter a whole bunch
if someone discovered a bunch of Freepers being sent over to "Freep" a poll, though, right?

Then the whole meaning of "skewed" would be obvious.

and it would matter VERY much then.

Because, you know...THEY are doing it.

26. You seem very comfortable ascribing other people's thoughts & motives for them.
Edited on Tue Oct-18-11 12:49 PM by DirkGently
What strikes me is how you simultaneously dismiss participation in a "poll" like this as pointless, but then go way beyond that into shouting angry profanities about it.

If it's pointless & silly, why bother to comment? But you seem personally offended somehow, as though the sterling integrity of an online newspaper click poll was being assailed.

So which is it? Silly waste of time or Very Serious Internet Business?

And, if you are really so offended by people clicking away on the Internet in the belief they are somehow making some small difference in the world, why would you respond with your own, impotent, meaningless clicking? Why be a member of an Internet discussion forum at all, for that matter?

Whatever it is, I hope you feel better soon.

anything"
The sentinel's question could be viewed as a push poll, designed to fill OWS-ers with futility.
