U.S. politics and those bugnutty Christians

Because I wrote a book with "atheist" in the subtitle and I go on political television shows to hawk that book, wellgroomed meat puppets frequently ask me why politicians such as Michele Bachmann and Rick Perry are saying bugnutty Christian stuff.

I have an idea why these politicians have gone all religious, but I haven't found a way to explain it in a sound bite, which is why I'm writing this. I think the whole problem comes down to the word "Christian" and what it has come to mean in my lifetime.

1. Bugnutty religious fanatics have always tried to hijack whatever religion was prominent enough ...

to give them power. They seem to have largely succeeded recently in the U.S. -- and others of different brand names in much of the rest of the world. Of course, atheists have sometimes done likewise, in the past century hijacking "Communism" and "Socialism" to create secular religions that legitimized their own tyrannies. Reasonable people of all beliefs, including secular ones, simply need to fight the bugnutty ideologues, or worse, the rational scum who let bugnutty ideologues front for their own power grabs.
