The TED talk also highlights a long-known problem with the way we do our energy accounting - the amount of work done by both wind and solar energy that we exclude because we take for granted the free energy embodied in both wind and sunshine. If you heat your home in the winter with natural gas, that counts in the official energy statistics, however if you design your home to take advantage of the available heat from the sun the amount your home is heated by that solar power is not recorded.

The point is that an important part of solving out energy problems lies in a re-conceptualization of the way most of us look at our use of energy.

Sure, the guy is promoting his company's research. And the talk itself did not go into detail about how the carbon nano film works, although it did give an overview. Also we know that research is one thing, putting it to practical use on a wide scale basis is another. But he has a company, he works with researchers at universities (whom he does not name, but presumably who they are can be found out fairly easily), and they are thinking up breakthrough applications for materials technology. What is your objection to this?

I remember years ago, around 1995, when Mosaic was just becoming popular. All the software world was abuzz with the potential of the World Wide Web. I had a conversation with another manager in the company where I worked, and he opined that the people who were promoting the WWW and its great potential were just "drinking their own bathwater". He was very sure of himself. He probably goes around now saying "Yeah, yeah, I saw it coming from the very beginning, I knew it was going to be big!"

Not casting asparagus here, just sayin'.

Sometimes we forget that the first wave of products are really just prototypes, which go through rounds of refinement in order to become truly finished products.

Anyway, I think materials science holds great promise so I thought the talk was quite interesting.

...for a 10 minute talk. I have long thought that materials science is a logical thing to look at for purposes of heating and cooling buildings, even if the main thing it does is allow buildings to maintain temperature better. The more we can maintain the right temperature level, the less need there is for power to change the temperature.
