Lawrence O'Donnell grabs rolled-up newspaper, whacks Big Dog over 'Embarrassing' Gaga Encounter
Lawrence O'Donnell: Bill Clinton, Lady Gaga Encounter 'Embarrassing' (VIDEO)

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/10/18/lawrence-odonnell-bill-clinton-lady-gaga_n_1017261.html

Lawrence O'Donnell castigated Bill Clinton for what he called a "weird" and "embarrassing" encounter with Lady Gaga at a concert for his foundation on Saturday.

Gaga's rather suggestive performance at the concert (she said she wanted to get "caught up in a Bill romance," announced that she was having a "Marilyn moment," and told Clinton she was "on the edge" with him) seemed to leave O'Donnell flabbergasted on his Monday show.

Calling Clinton "attention-starved," he wondered how Clinton could not see any potential awkwardness in having Gaga sing about a "bad romance" while he was seated next to Hillary Clinton, the woman most profoundly affected by his own, very bad romance.

O'Donnell then brought on columnist Jonathan Alter. "It just doesn't get any weirder than that," he said. Alter was not so worked up about the whole thing. He said Gaga was just referencing the aforementioned "Marilyn moment," when Marilyn Monroe sang for John F. Kennedy.

8. Well, I was embarrassed by this video. I don't think Hillary liked it one damn bit,
no matter how "hard" she laughed.

I'd be embarrassed if my husband had a party with that for entertainment.

Of course, there are better things to discuss and more important. But there is a grain of truth to what Lawrence is saying here...

I felt for Hillary and Chelsea. It must be difficult to have such a painful thing drug out like that and have to act like it's all fun.

19. Don't forget the video bit about a Clinton softball team
The mascot? Matt Damon proposed "a cheetah." They kept that in the program, too.

13. Lawrence clearly has no idea who Gaga really is.
In addition to being one of the world's biggest and smartest stars she and Bill have similar interests in that she has worked on (raised money for) AIDS/HIV prevention/treatment and Haiti relief efforts.

She is one of my (s)heroes and just so no one will get the idea that prudish reaction to Lady Gaga might be a generational thing - I am older than Bill Clinton.

16. It was an awkward situation, but I don't think Bill planned his own BD party --
This was a major fundraiser, which must have been planned by entertainment heavyweights who are supporters of President Clinton and his Foundation. I would imagine they rounded up the talent and planned the program.

It was known that Gaga was on the program, but who would ask that she be taken off? Maybe someone should have cautioned her about the nature of the event, with a former President, but then she was aware of the "Marilyn moment" with a sitting President, who also had a reputation as not the most faithful of husbands. I didn't see the Lawrence segment, but it sounds like Alter thought that was maybe the inspiration behind her performance.

17. I think a lot of people in the media do this:
They have to compare an incident to something in the past, as in bringing up the Marilyn Monroe-JFK comparison.
I think that was unnecessary. I think that those people cannot see a media event like this as something different from the Marilyn Monroe-JFk incident.

They lack imagination. And I am just barely old enough to remember when JFK was elected.

This also applies when you see cliches in newspaper headlines.

VOGUE has run out of ideas for years. Now they take women and make them look like somebody from the past, like Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe. They just slavishly rehash old movie stars. They did it a LONG time ago with dressing Lisa Marie Presley as Elvis as a G.I. from one of his movies.

No imagination.

23. two other points:
first of all, we are pretty sure Bill Clinton is not having sex with Lady Gaga.

Secondly, Lady Gaga's outfit was pretty modest. She was wearing a stretchy body suit but it had flesh colored panels floating over it. They were somewhat stiff, maybe like felt or ultrasuede. The top one swooped down over her chest and another piece came up from her upper thighs and abdomen, and they met in the middle with a button holding them together.

It was far more modest than the dress that Monroe was allegedly sewn into because it was so tight.

you could not really see Gaga's chest or crotch because of those panels.

Larry is being presumptuous about it being embarrassing.

Hillary looked at Bill with a huge smile on her face, when it started, and they all looked like they were enjoying themselves. He's presuming that Hillary's feelings were hurt. He is assuming things he does not know.

Edited on Tue Oct-18-11 11:09 PM by spooky3
through omission -- by gushing on and on about Michelle Obama as doing the best work ever as a spouse involved in campaigning. I think she's wonderful too, but the late Edwards did a great job giving speeches, etc., and she charmed and educated many media people, even those who didn't care for her husband. Lawrence acted as though no one even deserved to be mentioned in the same sentence as M. Obama. It's clear that, like Tweety, he often lets his emotions carry him away and he plays his favorites.

He didn't mention that this was a BIG charity concert at the Hollywood Bowl, for a good cause, the Clinton Foundation.
