In response to a question by ThinkProgress at the Society of Environmental Journalists annual conference in Miami, investigative reporter and novelist Carl Hiaasen offered his endorsement of the Occupy Wall Street movement. “It’s good for all of us, not just politicians, to look out the window and see the pain on Main Street,” he said. He recognized that the problems facing young generations today are more amorphous than the Vietnam War, and said he is “waiting and watching for leadership to emerge,” but he likes the “energy and the optimism” of the young people showing up. Hundreds of authors have lent their support to the 99 Percent movement, from Lemony Snicket to Alice Walker.
