http://dealbook.nytimes.com/2011/10/19/consumer-unit-for-seniors-draws-a-famous-name/The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has recruited a famous name: Hubert Humphrey.
On Wednesday, Hubert H. Humphrey III, the son of the deceased former vice president and Democratic presidential candidate, was appointed head of the bureau’s new “older Americans” unit. Mr. Humphrey, known as Skip, has been a longtime public official in Minnesota, serving as a state senator and four-term attorney general. More recently, he led the Minnesota arm of AARP, the lobbying group representing older Americans.
At the consumer bureau, Mr. Humphrey, 69, will be charged with preventing financial schemes aimed at defrauding senior citizens.
“I am honored and excited to bring my experience in consumer protection and my work with seniors to the C.F.P.B. to help educate seniors about fair practices and how to make financial decisions that are right for them,” Mr. Humphrey said in a statement. “A well-informed consumer is the best protection against fraud and deceptive practices — especially if that knowledge is backed up by tough regulatory enforcement.”
