The world will be watching this weekend as Tunisia, the birth-place of the Arab Spring, holds the first general election since the uprisings. European Union observers have arrived to help oversee the voting and prevent irregularities.
EU deputy chief observer Maria Espinosa said: “They have been trained and are being dispatched to constituencies across Tunisia,” adding that monitors have also been sent to France, Germany, Italy and Belgium to observe Tunisians voting there.
Despite dry runs to ensure things go smoothly, fears of fraud remain.
Tunisians will vote on Sunday for a special assembly to prepare a new constitution ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections.
