Whoever Printed This Sign Should Be Given A Medal
. . for proving that there are acts of humanity that folks are doing for each other every day in times like these.

41. "And now abideth Faith, Hope, Charity, these three; but the greatest of these is Charity."

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5 doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see through a glass, darkly, but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

-- Amen.

36. This one is in Portland, OR - but there are others ...
The picture is of Plaza Cleaners w/ two locations in Portland, OR

Article featuring them w/ a similar picture showing their address of 909:
http://helablog.com/2011/03/people-like-this-do-exist-%E2%80%93-free-dry-cleaning-for-jobless/
... AND they have a website showing their two addresses of 909 N.W. Everett, or 803 N.W. 21st St. in Portland
http://www.plazacleaners.net/

And there is one in NYC at 345 E. 72nd St., NYC - it was featured in a "NY Daily News" article:

13. So Encouraging
So many are suffering so much, the end result of the national political slide right since the B actor (the R's love them). It is so wonderful that people like these owners and Bon Jovi get it and are helping their hurting fellow citizens instead of wanting to hoard every last cent.

I just don't comprehend how the right can be so unfeeling and it irritates me that so many call themselves Christians...what a joke.

16. There's actually a lot of this going around.
I don't advertise it, but if I know someone that's been unemployed awhile, I'll type/print their resume for free. One young man got tears in his eyes. He said he only had enough money to cover the estimate I gave him, so instead he was going to go get something to eat. If I had had any cash on me, he would've gotten that, too. A friend of mine owns a restaurant in town and will feed people that come in and ask for "leftovers". At Walmart a few weeks ago, there was woman with two small kids with her. You could tell she was nervous when her order was being rung up. When she got the total she started visibly shaking. The older gentleman between us handed the cashier the difference. She started wheeping just a bit. I think he also stuck some money in her purse. I didn't get a good look.

People are more compassionate than we give them credit for. Even though some of us don't have a lot to share, if we have a spare $20 we'll give it to someone who has nothing.

If anyone is in the area, go get something cleaned and leave an extra $10 on the counter.

Good luck to you all.

62. Buying my blood pressure meds at the
pharmacy today. A woman with a surgical mask and dark glasses - whole face covered up, was in front of me. She had a terrible hacking wheezy cough. At first I thought, sheesh, hope I can surreptitiously get out the hand cleaner before following her!

Then, the pharmacy clerk told her that her insurance wouldn't cover her cough medicine. She asked how much. The clerk said $20. I expected her to dig deep, due to her obvious distress. She said she just wouldn't (couldn't) buy it. I'm standing there thinking of all the inane things I blow $20 on ... I'm lucky to be employed (as is my spouse). I said I would pay for it. She and I both teared up...she said she has leukemia and there was a prayer circle for her this morning.

I told her - this money isn't mine. It's all of ours. I'm just fortunate right now. And I wanted her to know I was paying for her meds because I believe this system is unjust. I didn't want her to be embarrassed by an act of "charity."

I only wish I had thought to thank her...she gave me a real gift today.

I don't think it was anything other than a response to the unfairness, inequality of things? I think of people who have horrible, uncomfortable, or boring jobs (I'm a paralegal, and worked in non-profits for a number of years; I presently work for a saintly attorney who does a ton of pro bono - bankruptcy - work.) Or those who have experienced any one of a number of losses, out of their control. I was laid off in 2009-10. Humiliating; frightening.

I don't think what I did was necessarily, nor should be, special.

I was paying forward on acts of generosity to myself; hope she'll pay it forward, if she gets the opportunity.

Just my own, personal, expression of socialism!

just to realize the whole world isn't a complete pile of shit.

Great post!

I was just over at the WSJ site on an article regarding the WORLD's 1% and how they own 40% of the WORLD's wealth...increasing from last year, and was reading the typical WSJ subscriber comment dribble about how they were a 1%'er because THEY worked hard, and no one is to blame but the 99% for being poor/jobless. What a dichotomy of subscribers.

We need to give credit to this place, wherever it is, for outstanding compassion during hard times.

This is who MOST of the 99% are. We care about each other. If only we could teach the 1% how to care:

73. If you know of such businesses (or are one), would you pleeeeeease.....
contact me?

I'd love to have a listing created for these types of businesses -- and all businesses supporting the Occupy Movement -- here:

http://www.wishadoo.org/index.php?do=/directory/main/

Having one resource to find these businesses, to me, would be so helpful.

:hi:

75. I know who she is. Her father and I are great friends.

The sign speaks to her character.

She does not own the dry cleaner, but it was her idea to do this.
