Greenwald nails it: democracy” is an illusion — a sham — if the most significant acts taken by those

Greenwald nails it:

..............

democracy” is an illusion — a sham — if the most significant acts taken by those leaders are kept concealed from the citizenry.

..........

Every now and then it’s worth pausing to reflect on how often we talk about the killing of people by the U.S. Literally, the U.S. government is just continuously killing people in multiple countries around the world. Who else does that? Nobody — certainly nowhere near on this scale. The U.S. President expressly claims the power to target anyone he wants, anywhere in the world, for death, including his own citizens; he does it in total secrecy and with no oversight; and this power is not just asserted but routinely exercised. The U.S., over and over, eradicates people’s lives by the dozens from the sky, with bombs, with checkpoint shootings, with night raids — in far more places and far more frequently than any other nation or group on the planet. Those are just facts.

What’s most striking about this is how little effort is needed to induce America’s political and media elites to acquiesce to it. The government need do nothing more than utter empty nationalistic phrases such as “we’re at war” and “Terrorist!” and this unparalleled, endless state violence all becomes instantly justified...

3. When I read about Gaddafi this morning I though, well there is another tick on Obama's
bed post.

Greenwald highlights this Facebook post.

What difference between Obama, putting tick marks beside his list, and Stalin, putting tick marks beside his list of names of those to be killed? Both men sat in vast offices and marked men for death. How long before the Obama's lists become as long as Stalin's? Stalin sent men to find the people on his list and shoot them in the back of the head. Obama sends robots. He kills children, now. What line is left to cross? The answer is: only one line. Numbers

13. Luminous Animal
your "highlighted" quote above was spot on....

It is not that we need to equate Obama or anyone else to Stalin...
it is, however, more than good to know about the past and think about the future.

peace, kpete

4. As the Tea Baggers will be quick to tell us, America is not a Democracy
it is a Republic and that has been extremely obvious in this tax on the wealthy debate of today.. Representatives are voting against tax increases for the wealthy even though well over 70% of their constituents want the opposite...Even a few Democrats are going against both their Party and their Constituents.. What could be their reasoning, I wonder?

20. Information is voter suppression?
Edited on Thu Oct-20-11 05:55 PM by SomethingFishy
I couldn't find anything in that article that would lead me not to vote. Can you tell me specifically where he is trying to suppress voting? Also can you point out the factual errors in this story? There must be a ton of them if he is trying to suppress voters.

21. Telling people their vote doesn't matter is voter suppression.
"I couldn't find anything in that article that would lead me not to vote."

Me neither. Greenwald's a windbag.

and I'm against it when Obama continues the abuses of his position.
