Still beating all comers, Obama campaign touts small donors
Oct. 20, 2011

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- President Barack Obama would beat all Republican comers if the election were held today, according to a new poll from the Associated Press-GFK. While about half of all adults surveyed said that he does not deserve reelection, his current GOP challengers are apparently held in even lower esteem. Obama would defeat former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney 48% to 45% and top businessman Herman Cain 49% to 43%. And he would beat Texas Gov. Rick Perry 51% to 42%. Separately, Public Policy Polling found the president struggling a bit in the key battleground state of Ohio, where he is locked in a tie with Romney but ahead of all other contenders.

With Barack Obama's small donors returning to the tune of more than 1 million contributors, many of whom responded to urgent email solicitations, the campaign is up today with a nice info-graphic breaking down the numbers by everything from location to name.

One random and interesting stat: The likeliest time to give was the noon hour, and Thursday was the richest day for the campaign.

The claim: "This is what a grassroots campaign looks like."

Yet, there are average, working-class Americans, like me, who have benefited in one way or the other from one of the President's actions or initiatives.

For instance, college-age voters may recall the President's health initiative which allows them to remain on their parent's health insurance plans until the age of 26.

I took advantage of the President's home mortgage plan and got my payment reduced nearly $300 a month.

4. Have you donated any of that personal savings to the campaign?
If so, would you still have made that donation had you *not* personally benefited? Are campaign donations to be thought of in quid pro quo terms?

5. I can't speak for anyone else
. . . but my money is way tight and I'll probably only donate once this election. But, I mentioned the personal connection many folks may have to the re-election of the President because you intimated that they were 'suckers'. I would imagine that a college student relying on his parent's insurance because of the coverage and rates would look at the republican promise to overturn the law and become personally invested in the President's re-election. I can think of dozens of examples.

9. I sorta took that another way though
Here I am, let's say, a single parent of a 22 year old college drop out. Let's say I kicked him out of the house because I cannot control him and he refuses to get a job or to help around the house.

As I heard it, the law does not just ALLOW me to keep my son on my insurance, it MANDATES that I do so.

If that is true, that is gonna COST me $295.09 per month to keep him on my coverage. It also costs my employer another $247.94 per month.

For the most part, this is just $6,000 a year in extra revenue for the insurance company. The average 22-26 year old is unlikely to use more than $500 a year in medical services. So United Health care can say hello to another $5,000 a year in profits per kid.

10. I don't think it 'mandates' parents to cover them. Adults are responsible for themselves

Effective beginning January 1, 2011. Extends Coverage for Young People up to 26th Birthday through Parents' Insurance Requires new health plans and certain grandfathered plans to allow young people up to their 26th birthday to remain on their parents’ insurance policy, at the parents’ choice.

8. it hasn't been nice of Obama to throw the bottom 80% under the bus
but you apparently DON'T know that.

Considering that Obama has not represented, not stood up for, not fought for the bottom 80%, if they donate money to his campaign it is because they are suckers, donating money to somebody who does not represent them.
