Rednecks planning protest of Scott Walker speech in TN
Edited on Thu Oct-20-11 08:48 PM by Ellipsis
This comes to us from a Williamson County: A group that calls itself the Redneck Party is planning to protest a speech next week in Franklin by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker.

The provocatively-named* organization will be standing outside the Williamson County Republican Party’s annual Reagan Day Dinner, where Walker is scheduled to give the keynote address. The protest will include members of the Redneck Party and workers’ advocates.

Organizers say they will be bringing cowbells and whistles. They claim this is a reference to the protests in Madison earlier this year, but it seems like it might have something to do with cows, as well.

“We want Walker to feel right at home,” says the Facebook page for the group’s Tennessee chapter.

3. The term "Redneck" is misused here frequently

As this group reminds, WV coalminers in the 1920's wore red bandanas in solidarity. The 1% then mocked the rednecks. Now, even progressive pro-labor types use it as a pejorative, but originally it stood for labor.

As to the protest, according to the Facebook Page:

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker will be the keynote speaker at the Williamson County GOP Reagan Day Dinner this year. Need I say more? We will be mounting a huge visibility event in solidarity with our Brothers and Sisters in Wisconsin. We hope to have participants from throughout the region, from Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois to Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, and from Arkansas and Missouri to North Carolina and Virginia.

Please give this the widest dissemination through your friends lists and groups. We want this to be so big that Ed Schultz covers it live!

ON WISCONSIN!!!! STAND AGAINST TYRANNY!

I'm hoping to get some folks from the mountain to go with me.

4. I was always under the impression that the term redneck came from Arkansas

...where the soil was red and from working the soil the dust combined with sweat permeated the neck.

8. Southern born and southern bred here........
and I've always heard the term came from people who worked outside under the southern sun. The neck was the most exposed place on a worker's body, underneath the hat and above the shirt neckline.
