Republicans Block Second Attempt at Jobs Bill With Help from Nelson, Pryor and Lieberman

By Heather

So much for caring more about keeping teachers, firefighters and police officers working. The Republicans in the Senate with some help from the usual suspects when it comes to blocking anything that might help everyday Americans -- Ben Nelson (Neb.), Mark Pryor (Ark.) and Joe Lieberman (Conn.) -- blocked the passage of a portion of President Obama's jobs bill this Thursday night.

Lawrence O'Donnell showed us some of Vice President Joe Biden's speech from the day before, urging members of the Senate to support the bill -- Supporting middleclass over millionaires:

Vice President Joe Biden eloquently offers Republicans a simple choice: support your local sheriffs or support your local millionaires. MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell explains in the Rewrite.

1. I saw a Gore/Lieberman 2000 bumper sticker yesterday.
WTF was Gore thinking when he chose him?

3. I am anti-Lieberman as a person can be
but I'm sure Gore had two things in mind: Lieberman spoke out against Bill Clinton's Mona Lewinsky relationship early on and in 2000 that was a big issue. Gore needed to separate himself from Clinton's sexual behavior. Note: Isn't it ironic that Bill and Hillary are still together and Al and Tipper are not?

Florida was a make it or break it state for Gore. Lieberman was a real draw for a lot of seniors, especially those who share his faith. If it had not been for the "butterfly ballot" mess, Lieberman would have deserved credit for getting Florida in the Dem column and winning the election. I've always thought Florida was stolen by the Repubs.

5. Florida was stolen by the Supreme Court, the vote recount went to Gore
but by the time that count was finished 'shrub' was in office and 'move-along' was the song of the day...

6. Nevertheless, it's always a mistake to go with a fundy, like Lieberman.

11. Lieberman as VP might not have been all that bad
Lieberman's fundamental political principle is Liebermanism. Right now, he sees his best opportunity as being perceived as the responsible center, not committed to either major party. In addition, he's still pissed at the Democratic Party for rejecting him in 2006, when he lost the primary, and he's pissed at all the Democratic Party officeholders who endorsed the Democratic candidate.

As Gore's VP, however, he would have been in completely different circumstances. His agenda would have been to serve two terms as VP and then run for President in 2008. To that end, he would have been a stalwart Democrat. He would even have been trying to appeal to us DFH's, hoping to avert a challenge from the left for the 2008 nomination.

Lieberman was popular in Florida. Without him on the ticket, Bush probably would've won the state legitimately. As against that, if Gore had picked Kerry, then New Hampshire probably would have gone blue, and Gore would have become President.

12. Had he done the right thing, it would have been for the wrong reasons.
I have a certain mistrust for people who can tell you what god wants you to do. And orthodox Jews were my first exposure to that mindset. I didn't encounter a fundy Christian until I was a teenager, and I was shocked!

DFHs -- ?? Hillary?

DFH decoded
DFH = "dirty fuckin' hippie"; the term is sometimes used jokingly on DU to refer to us, the progressives in the Democratic Party who are disdained by the more establishment types.

My only enthusiastic vote (and still the man!) was for George McGovern.

I vote for Democrats, but mostly they are too conventional for me.

Hint: There are too many jobs in the workasphere, and they lately concentrate on concentrating wealth. We should employ people selectively, and allow others to retire. We need to manage resources. And that's for a start.

And I was at Woodstock!:hippie:

7. Florida was certainly stolen by repugs, and
Gore's view or inclination or whatever to separate himself from Clinton was a BIG mistake, imo. I don't sanction Clinton's behavior, or agree with everything he did, but I do recognize his political genius and the possibility his contribution/participation in Gore/Lieberman might have helped overcome the theft.

4. I have no proof,
but I strongly believe that Gore was forced by the Financiers of the "Centrist" Democrats to include
the Former Chairman of the DLC on the ticket.

Follow the Money.
They made a "deal".

You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their excuses.

9. No forcing was needed, Gore was DLC all the way, anyways.
But he massively disappointed me when he chose Holy Joe.

Oh, and I wonder how all those union members who went with Lieberman over Lamont feel about the huge backstabbing they got from that piece of shit.
