Hamline prof's post on student loan debt goes viral (OWS 99%)

http://www.startribune.com/local/blogs/132317538.html
The Hamline University professor posted the photo on his Facebook page last week. A few friends passed it on. Ten shares, then 20. Then, suddenly, thousands.
The photo, inspired by and styled like those on the “We Are The 99 Percent” feed, has gone viral.

1. Cost of attending Hamline
      Tuition and Fees
Tuition $31,652
Room and board $8,504
TOTAL $40,156

Books and supplies $1,200

Average Aid Package $28,406

The University of Minnesota in 1968 wasn't really for the 99%. It was reasonably hard to get into, depending on major, and and it was even harder to stay. The majority of those admitted from my HS did not get a University of Minnesota bachelors degree, although many did from other colleges.

2. My experience at Hamline
Year Aid
Freshman Good
Sophomore Good
Junior Zilch
Senior Zilch

25 years later I'm still making student loan payments.

And still, high school counselors are selling the snake oil that private school costs the same as state school when you take financial aid into account.

3. Yes, and they dangle that big student aid number without saying what part is loans
And the loan part is not really aid. It is a debt that generally cannot be discharged even by bankruptcy!

4. Problem with the letter is that in 1968 tuition at the
state school I went to, was abound $500 per semester for a full time undergraduate who was not paying extra fees like science, art, and many, other majors did.
Then there were the text books, food, housing, transportation and medical after if developed anemia, a thyroid decency and mono that lasted about 9 months.

My 20hr per week job netted me about $82 per week after with holdings. Oh, yeah, he forgot to add employers don't have to pay part time employees minimum wage.
