Gadhafi body stashed in shopping center freezer
MISRATA, Libya -- Moammar Gadhafi's blood-streaked body was stashed in a commercial freezer at a shopping center today as Libyans waited in line outside for a chance to see him and authorities tried to figure out where to bury the longtime dictator.

The makeshift provisions for the corpse reflected the disorganization and confusion that has surrounded Gadhafi's death. Accounts of how he died after being captured by revolutionary fighters remained contradictory, and the top U.N. rights official raised concerns he was shot to death in custody.

His burial had been planned today, in accordance with Islamic traditions calling for quick interment. But the interim government delayed it, saying the circumstances of his death still had to be determined. Information Minister Mahmoud Shammam also said authorities are "debating right now what the best place is to bury him."

Outside the shopping center, residents waited in line for their chance enter the freezer and have their picture taken with Gadhafi's body. Different visiting hours have been set for women and children and for men.

1. Fer the record
This violates not just conventions but Islamic law. Though an investigation is truly in order. A war crime s a war crime no matter how much passions drove it.

11. Violating Islamic law is the whole point
They're desecrating the body, according to the region's own cultural mores.

15. Bingo.
Gaddafi was no Muslim. Why should they treat his body according to the religious rites of a religion he did everything he could to punish and desecrate?

12. Which is more important? The rule of law, and the investigation into his death or islamic burial?

13. Both... For the sake of a future libya
It will be a heck of a statement to start life with...we will not tolerate this. This is what kadaffi did, we will not tolerate this and we want to start our new dawn under a rule of law. I know this is quaint in a country (ours) that is increasingly closing as a society, but for their sakes as a newly born democracy...I hope they do that.

14. I don't like that they're having people parade by his body, but it's probably cathartic.
So I can't fault them for doing it (I don't think it says anything about the "character" of Libyan people though some may attempt to slander them for wanting to see the body).

But until the investigation can be done the burial will have to wait. Many Libyan's did not consider Gaddafi a practicing Muslim anyway, some even believed he was a Jew.

17. ^ Rolling eyes ^
I can't believe people here are making excuses for cruelty and inhumanity.

I'm getting used to D.U. 2011. One of my Muslim doctors tells me I should avoid this place in order to avoid stress, not to mention stupidity.

But I want to support those members who remain who still have a humane, evolved perspective. The ones who don't rah rah! over tragedies.

22. So, I basically agree with you, but because I show understanding I am "making excuses for cruelty...
...and inhumanity."

Interesting.

24. We've done the exhibit body of bad guy here
But you missed what I said by a mile. It IS a violation of both Islamic and international norms. In the short term it might be catharthic. Hell, draw and quarter might be as well...but it sets a quite shaky legal precedent. It is a quick sand, a slippery slope. In fact the people who need those legal protections the most are our worst animals. And trust me, all cultures have them. So my question becomes...who is next? That is the kind f slippery slope you enter.

By the way by this shaky logic we all should be able to take law into our own hands when convenient. As I said in a post yesterday, batman quite the interesting 'toon character, should remain in the world of fiction. For their sake I hope they find the executioner, if that indeed happened and from the looks it probably did...and met out the military justice deserved. Yes, that means court martial.

As omnipotent, god-like and powerful as he was, for as long as he was (nearly two generations) it is probably necessary.
