First Texas Did Away With Last Meals for Prisoners; Now it's Axing Lunch on Weekends

Texas! The land where leaders break execution records, where potentially innocent men are put to death, and where death row inmates can't choose their last meal. Now, the state also has the distinction of denying its prisoners lunch on weekends. Really. The Times:

Thousands of...inmates in the Texas prison system have been eating fewer meals since April after officials stopped serving lunch on the weekends in some prisons as a way to cut food-service costs. About 23,000 inmates in 36 prisons are eating two meals a day on Saturdays and Sundays instead of three. A meal the system calls brunch is usually served between 5 and 7 a.m., followed by dinner between 4 and 6:30 p.m.

Why are Texas prisoners being denied meals? Because Rick Perry drove the state into a $27 billion financial hole, you see, and now officials are looking for ways to trim costs (in this case, a few mill). ...........(more)

Edited on Fri Oct-21-11 06:50 PM by madrchsod
he`s close to 70 and he decided 10 yrs ago he best stay there cause there`s no future for him on the outside. he`s in a minimum security facility that is worse than the system here in illinois. i can`t imagine how much worse the texas prison will become....if that is even possible.

3. It does not say whether these prisons are contracted.
If they are, I can guarantee they were awarded the contract on 3 meals a day. If that is the case, where is the savings going? Was the contract renegotiated to show the reduced cost for meals?

Based on our corrupt justice system, how many truly innocent persons are suffering from this? What about a diabetic who must maintain his/her blood sugar?

This is disgusting on many levels. We brag we are a humane society. That seems not to be the case in Texas.

5. "They're prisoners, for crying out loud. Give them a slice of stale bread and a tin cup of water."
Isn't that the direction this is headed with the Republicans. Right back to the time of Dickens. It's shameful.
