Cantor Cancels Speech as Occupy Philly Plans Protest

by Tula Connell, Oct 21, 2011

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) supposedly wants to talk about the nation’s inequality—but not to just anyone. Cantor, at the last minute, canceled an appearance this afternoon at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was slated to speak. Curiously enough, Occupy Philadelphia had organized a march from City Hall to the campus to protest Cantor’s speech. But Cantor’s not giving a reason for the cancellation.

Earlier this week, we noted that Cantor had shifted his rhetoric to seemingly take a softer line on the Occupy Wall Street movement. But despite changing his tactics from calling protesters “mobs” to suddenly going on the circuit to discuss inequality, Cantor’s “solution” is the same old rhetoric backed by the 1 percent: Don’t create jobs. Cut taxes on the rich....

UPenn: U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor cancels Wharton speech

U.S. Rep. Eric Cantor, the Republican majority leader in the U.S. House, canceled his scheduled speech at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business because if was going to be open to the first 300 people who showed up. Given that hundreds of Occupy Philadelphia protesters were planning to march from City Hall to the campus to protest the speech, that could have been lively audience.

"The Office of the Majority Leader was informed last night by Capitol Police that the University of Pennsylvania was unable to ensure that the attendance policy previously agreed to could be met," Cantor spokeswoman Laena Fallon said in an email. "Wharton is a educational leader in innovation and entrepreneurship, and the Majority Leader appreciated the invitation to speak with the students, faculty, alumni, and other members of the UPenn community."

Cantor had expected that his speech, on income disparity in the country, would be open to the media, Wharton students and faculty and guests of the university.....

Congressman Eric Cantor canceled a scheduled speech Friday at Penn's Wharton School of Business after determining the audience could no longer be controlled. Hundreds of Occupy Philadelphia protesters were marching from City Hall to the campus to protest the public speech which was to address "A Fair Shot at the American Dream and Economic Growth."

In remarks prepared for the speech (published after its cancellation by the university's newspaper The Daily Pennsylvanian), Cantor was to say "There are politicians and others who want to demonize people that have earned success in certain sectors of our society. They claim that these people have now made enough, and haven’t paid their fair share. But, pitting Americans against one another tends to deflate the aspirational spirit of our people and fade the American dream. I believe that the most successful among us are positioned to use their talents to help grow our economy and give everyone a hand up the ladder and the dignity of a job."

College students from Penn and Temple joined the Occupy Philly protesters on Day 16 of their demonstrations. Friday at noon, Temple students unhappy with tuition hikes and cuts to professor salaries began to march from their campus to Dilworth Plaza, the Occupy Philly base camp. At 2:30 p.m., the combined group then began to march down Walnut Street to the University of Pennsylvania, picking up Penn students along the way.
.................

Cantor, the House Majority Leader and U.S. Representative for Virginia, made headlines two weeks ago when he stated he was “increasingly concerned about the growing mobs occupying Wall Street and other cities across the country.” The use of the word “mobs” caused considerable controversy. Cantor has since backed away from these comments but still claimed the movement was divisive and pitted Americans against other Americans.

8. Lol, they can't escape the American People no matter where they
go anymore. It was brilliant to spread this movement all over the country so that no matter where they go they will have to face the real people. They really are scared of real unpaid shills who make up the population they have so utterly misrepresented.

UPDATE: Eric Cantor Cancels Speech At Last Minute »
Today In Occupy Philly: Occupy Eric Cantor

Occupy Philly hit day fifteen today, and if we’re being honest we kind of expected it to fizzle out by now. So congrats occupiers! You did it!

On another note, the protesters are currently occupying Eric Cantor, probably based off of some claims he made where he called them mobs and said they were “pitting of Americans against Americans.” Silly protesters, pitting Americans against Americans is for politicians.

In other Occupy news, Occupy Philadelphia released their “First Message” yesterday, and it really is more effective if you read it in a nameless, faceless, robot voice.

“We, the General Assembly of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in solidarity with all other peaceful occupations in communities around the world, offer this first official message from our General Assembly to every other General Assembly on this planet. We arrived at this message through our process of direct democracy.....more.

14. Eric Cantor Called For ‘A Steve Jobs Plan’ In Prepared Remarks For Cancelled Speech

Eric Cantor Called For ‘A Steve Jobs Plan’ In Prepared Remarks For Cancelled Speech

Benjy Sarlin October 21, 2011, 3:20 PM 14412 219

Eric Cantor may have cancelled Friday’s lecture on income inequality out of concerns protestors would dominate the audience, but you can still read his prepared remarks, in which the congressman calls on students to take after Steve Jobs and start their own business. The GOP Majority Leader’s office sent the complete speech to The Daily Pennsylvanian, UPenn’s campus newspaper.

“There is a ladder of success in America,” Cantor wrote. “However, it is a ladder built not by Washington, but by hard work, responsibility and the initiative of the people of our country.”

.......

Cantor addressed the growing debate over whether the rich are paying their fair share, but never mentioned the growing Occupy Wall Street movement, whose planned protests led to his speech’s cancellation, by name.............................

Here is one of the comments from the comment section:

“They claim that these people have now made enough, and haven’t paid their fair share. But, pitting Americans against one another tends to deflate the aspirational spirit of our people and fade the American dream.”

This is the most disgusting he could have said in my view. The view that the American Dream = Money is a cancer that is corrupting our society and is exactly the problem with Wall Street. To me the American Dream is to make enough money to comfortably live doing something you love. Its about enjoying life and thriving in a society that itself is thriving. Will some make more money than others? Sure that's life, but that doesn't mean that those that make more money should control so much wealth that they hinder other's dreams. As Elizabeth Warren states, rich people's wealth is derived as much from their own work as the work of others. A stable society makes it POSSIBLE to BE rich.

15. Cantor thinks families will be able to loan them $$ to start a business or they

can 'dip into their savings'!

Part to the problem is that banks are not loaning to small businesses. Big banks are not loaning to the smaller banks.

Besides many are not able to save anymore-. I realize some families can loan money but it is becoming difficult to do.

http://thedp.com/index.php/article/2011/10/eric_cantor_wharton_remarks_as_prepared_for_delivery

.....As students at Wharton, you will be much better positioned than most to land a job of your choice after graduation. But for the majority of young people, small businesses will give them their start. These employers are the restaurant owners, health care providers, or small high tech start-ups.

Small business men and women are the key to the formula for success and opportunity in America. Each one of them took a risk and did whatever they needed to do to make it work. They dipped into their savings or borrowed from family to start their dream. They committed countless hours and determination, they committed their lives in pursuit of that dream. They may employ just a few people, but each one of those people is able to start building a better life for their families just because one individual took a risk. Why? Because they wanted a fair shot at earning success and gaining happiness.

Let’s remember that happiness in America is defined as a pursuit, and that definition comes from our Declaration of Independence that was written right here in Philadelphia. Pursuing both happiness and independence derive from the ingenuity and grit of the American people, not the American government. ...................
