RTTBy a 50 to 50 vote, Republicans and some Senate Democrats blocked a motion to bring the bill - one component of President Barack Obama's overall jobs bill - from being brought up on the Senate floor. The measure would have needed 60 votes to proceed after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., invoked cloture on debate about bringing the bill up.
Reid lambasted the Republican opposition to the measure, which he said would have kept as many as 400,000 teachers and first responders on the job by increasing taxes on those making more than $1 million per year.
"By asking millionaires to pay an extra half a penny on the dollar, this bill would have created jobs by keeping our communities safe and ensuring that our children continue to have access to a high-quality education," Reid said. "Unfortunately, protecting millionaires and defeating President Obama are more important to my Republican colleagues than creating jobs and getting our economy back on track."He added, "Democrats agree with the overwhelming majority of Americans that teachers and first responder jobs are worth defending, while lower taxes for millionaires and billionaires are not."

Even in the face of the 99 percent movement and the OWS protests, the Republicans insist on firing teachers and firefighters over rolling back any taxcuts to the rich. Afterall, by firing teachers and firefighters, employment should get better, right?
