1. Thank you, my dear hissyspit...
I honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry...

Funny thing: The LA Times doesn't seem to print the whole strip. I think they usually leave off the first couple of panels, I think.

I wonder why they do that...besides saving space, of course.

Oh well.

3. Learned about this from reading that old Calvin & Hobbes book

that gives some inside baseball on the comic industry. Sunday comics are printed in full in some papers, and without the first part in others. Some comics respond to this by having just a gigantic banner with the name of the comic, others have a "throwaway joke", a standalone joke related to the rest of the strip but not vital to getting the joke from the full strip.

Has been that way for years. (Edit: and is just to save space.)

4. It's actually a little more elaborate than that.
Let's look at today's (rerun) of "The New Adventures of Queen Victoria:"

The strip can be run normally, or in a three-column two row format by eliminating the top row:

Or in a four-row, two column format by eliminating the last panel of the top row:

This is why most Sunday comics have not only a throwaway gag, but usually a throwaway punchline to the gag at the beginning.

5. He doesn't have to write a check
TheGovernment will do it for him and send him the bill, in the form of reduced/eliminated retirement and benefits. As a vet he'll be one of the first to get cut.

6. "at our age? with my knees?"
Sadly spot on for some of us.
Trudeau is always so trenchant.

10. I Snarfed My Coffee When I Saw This In My Paper!
Trudeau still has it.....terrific biting satire that is a grand slam home run.

I would hope most tea party types will sooner rather than later realize what's really what and who it really is that's robbing us blind.

22. I've generally admired Trudeau's work over the years
but lately he has been even more scathing in his comments. This is much needed as we are the victims of the greatest bunch of shameless economic gangsters in history. What Trudeau seems to be saying is that they are not going to stop. They simply don't care about the many millions of innocent people's lives that they have destroyed. With their cohorts in Congress, the media and the courts they have created a massive coup that has been designed to transfer the world's wealth to a select few. I read just the other day that a mere 147 corporations and financial institutions like Goldman Sachs are, for all practical purposes, in control of the world's economy. This is anything but the "free market" in action. This is economic fascism. Trudeau's strip reminds me of the late, great George Carlin who warned us that "The Big Club" as he called it was coming for everything including our pensions and our Social Security and that they would get it sooner or later. I see little to convince me otherwise when I hear the lackeys in our Congress like Cantor, Ryan and Boehner. I have said this before and I will repeat it - I don't really recognize this country anymore. The "New Normal" disgusts me.

12. they stole our retirement funds, too
Author/researcher Ellen Schultz has been studying this for around a decade. I saw it in action when I worked for "corporate America," from which I fled for the education system.

NY Times review of it:
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/18/business/when-retirees-are-shortchanged-for-corporate-profits.html

Amazon page with reader reviews:

As far as the "bad knees" go, the younger generation is spot on with where to protest. While I may not sleep on Wall Street, I can support it with funds, food, etc.

15. Been a while since I read up on the financial coup -- and no doubt about it!! . . . .
Edited on Sun Oct-23-11 03:56 PM by defendandprotect
Didn't Catherine Austin Fitts say that they used pension fund money to fund moving

jobs overseas?

And to create the housing bubble -- ???

Not to mention that many watching Global Warming and insurance companies/elites say that

they took over pension money to pay for the immense damage being done by Global Warming

over past 20 years and more!

What we have to remember is that legitimate economies are created by the people --

and that it is elites/banks and their financial institutions which manipulate the economy

for their own benefit. Very little can be made from a stable, predicatable economy!

It's the up's and down's that are profitable -- especially when strings are being pulled.

Also keep in mind that this year we've had almost 100 banks fail -- banks which were

"under the supervision of the Federal Reserve Bank" -- !!! And which were "crxitically

undercapitalized" -- !!!

We've also had at the minimum a two year depression which seems as engineered as the first

depression !!
