Sharpie Markers wants you to STOP PROTESTING
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=feIlvjN6fIM&feature=player_embedded

This isn't a political video, so I can't really put it in that section...

But at 10 seconds the protest marchers are carrying a big banner sign that reads

STOP PROTESTING

WTF?

Anybody want to field this one?

2. But, they really DON'T want anyone to stop.
It's meant to be ironic.

7. re: It's meant to be ironic
rather blunt, messy and unsophisticated irony at that.

5. When they start doing Dummies for Irons jokes then...
...we will have turned a corner of some sort and possibly have arrived someplace or other.

6. nonsense

Every other symbol that occurred after the skateboard goes from blank to magic marker colorful is positive and clearly non-ironic. The sign doesn't make sense in context. Either it was a deliberate joke or the ad agency's sense of irony is as faulty as some on this board.

8. It's an advertisement, and clearly it has been successful.
We're all sitting around discussing it, meanwhile being bombared with imagery of the product. So that was a win for the ad agency.

They don't care whether you protest or not, as long as you buy some sharpies.

14. But OTOH,
if the sign said "keep on protesting", then FOX news watchers would get upset. But they just want you to keep thinking about sharpies, and that part worked!

Welcome to DU, by the way. :hi:

15. That was my take. There was no context for the "non-protest"
That said, it can be read as "ironic", but my first impulse is to think: Sharpie doesn't want me to buy their product.

I think it's a flawed concept.
