One Year-Old Baby Thinks Magazine Is an iPad That Does Not Work
BY RUSTY BLAZENHOFF

Jean-Louis Constanza posted a video, titled A Magazine Is an iPad That Does Not Work, featuring a one-year old baby trying to manipulate a traditional paper magazine like a touchscreen Apple iPad.

Technology codes our minds, changes our OS. Apple products have done this extensively. The video shows how magazines are now useless and impossible to understand, for digital natives. It shows real life clip of a 1-year old, growing among touch screens and print. And how the latter becomes irrelevant. Medium is message. Humble tribute to Steve Jobs, by the most important person : a baby.

10. (speaking for ME)
NO, the part with the baby isn't what's dumb about this. Humans being so amazed and calling it a tribute to Steve Jobs? not that's embarrassing.

I agree, I thought the "tribute to Jobs" thing was BS.

I just thought it was a cute example of how technology affect us.

18. it's so neat seeing how our minds will work!
that the young one jumped right to imagining the electronic book! As long as the battery doesn't run out it's very cool, after that :argh: lol

20. So, this does not represent a fundamental change in how we interact with media?

Is someone else responsible for the Ipad?

Did Henry Ford not change the paradigm?

Bell?

Anyone else who created or ran with a brand new technology? Has no one done anything to change the way we live?

Steve Jobs is indeed responsible for at least one small, but fundamental change in society. No BS about it.

23. yeah -- and a parent that gives a one year old an electronic gadget is a fucking idiot
But then -- it seems there is a ravenous wave of addicted apple lemmings in this thread who would rather go over a cliff than put down their crackpipes.

Carry on :eyes:

are people who were very recently babies themselves (e.g. four-five year olds)

26. worshipping at the altar of Apple is one thing,
pushing the addiction on a toddler too young to understand it is wrong.

But hey, y'all want your kids to be able to pick out the appropriate pictures on the McDonald's menu, so they can make that minimum wage job - go for it.

32. Right, like all that television we forced on them.
Let's not forget things like calculators. I'll bet kids these days don't even know how to use an abacus!

How dare we 'force' all this technology on children.

My god, I mean, they think that it's NORMAL to be able to talk to people who aren't at home by the phone at almost any time!

Can you imagine the horror of exposing children to the evils of DVR? They might grow up thinking they can watch what they want when they want to.

And don't get me started on comic books!

In short; You're clueless here. But that's ok, like every generation your 'concerns' will just be seen as another relic of an ignorant age.

4. This has always been happening.
My grandparents were the first generation raised on radio.
My parents were the first generation raised on TV.
I was the first generation raised on home computers.
The generation after me was the first raised on the internet.
And now their kids....

Technology always changes the way we think; what we're raised with becomes the norm.

Pretty sad when people's Apple haterism demands they resent a freaking video of a freaking baby.

... but I always thought the God in that story was being kind of a dick. We can live here only if we don't eat the apples and gain the knowledge? Okay, bye.

17. I've accidentally tried "swiping" things that are not swipable
I don't have an iPhone, but mr. frazzled does, and after I used it a while, I sometimes forgot that my stupid (unsmart) little cellphone can't be manipulated in the same way. I'd be touching the screen and swearing when it didn't do anything. In fact, I've done this to other glossy, flat things.

The manipulation of the iPhone and iPad is so incredibly "natural" that within just a day or two you find you're doing it to everything. Or wondering why everything doesn't work like that.

So don't laugh at that baby. I'm a grown adult and I've done it.

19. I often start to try and rewind the radio in the car.
I dream on a time line and use layers for content. I have found myself (way too often) thinking I should "undo" or "control-z" things as they happen in real life, like spilling milk, or bumping my elbow. It's crazy but I no longer process thoughts as I once did.

I loved when baby tested her finger on her leg to make sure it was working. So adorable, and smart. Thanks for the video.

29. The conclusions are bull.
A baby will pick up a spoon and shake it, thinking the spoon is a rattler. It does not mean that the baby will never learn how to use a spoon, so why don't we all turn off the fire alarms? Holy crap.

Here's a question: why don't the stupid parents READ to the kid? At 1 year old, my niece and nephews knew what a magazine was and what it was for because their uncle, their grandparents, and their parents read to them. Alarmist Luddite B.S. is what this looks like to me. If that girl had been read to, she'd have no problems knowing what pages are; instead, it looks like the parents have been doing way too much babysitting by iPad. The kid won't turn out any stupider than if the TV had been her babysitter instead.

30. Cute video, but I don't think the conclusion is accurate.
Her brain hasn't been rewired. A baby's brain is already wired to be more drawn to the bright, noisy, interactive object than the static, dull object.

There's a reason they don't market magazines for infants. Babies can't read yet and once a baby learns to turn the pages, the pages themselves would never hold their interest for very long.
