CARPENTERSVILLE – School District 300, one of the largest school districts in the state, is prepared to occupy Springfield.

Plans have been set to rally at least 600 students, parents, teachers and administrative staff at noon Monday at the Illinois Capitol in an attempt to sway lawmakers to kill Amendment 3 of Senate Bill 540.

The Carpentersville-based school district has been encouraging families, its employees and students to help put grassroots pressure on lawmakers as they return for the veto session this week.

--snip--

“This is literally our LAST CHANCE before the Senate makes its final decision,” school board President Anne Miller wrote in a letter to district staff members and parents.

The school district, ranked as the sixth-largest in the state, anticipates collecting about $14 million in additional tax revenue annually after the current 23-year tax break expires in September 2012.

The village of Hoffman Estates, meanwhile, is pushing for the bill’s passage. Sears is the largest employer in Hoffman Estates.

Sears bailed out of downtown Chicago and left major economic wreckage two decades ago. Now that their 23-year tax break is up they are threatening to bail. They are the worst sort of corporate citizen and are deserving of a boycott.
....
Just another BAD corporate citizen slinking out of town to avoid it committments.

1. I wouldn't worry too much. Sears is in serious financial troubles.
I am surprised they have lasted this long.

I give them another 2 years on life support.

they just announced that they are going to license out the "Craftsman" name.

That will be their final undoing.

Like Sears or not, their hand tools under the Craftsman brand have always been top notch.

after this, they will be crap.

and as such, you can pull the final curtain on Sears.

2. I never did figure out how bankrupt Sears bought bankrupt Kmart
"lets exchange our worthless stock?" And you're right about the tools - I have some from my grandfather that are still going very strong - and still covered under warranty because they really were made to last back then

3. I think Sears by buying Kmart, tried to tap into the "walmart" way of doing things...
I remember years ago, when I worked at sears as a teen, it was pounded into our brains that sears wasn't a "dept" type store. That it was something more, something better. Frankly, I never saw the difference. Anyway, I think that kind of odd mentality was part and parcel of the upper echelons of sears command.

So they tried buying Kmart to compete directly with the Targets and Walmarts out there. Sadly, it hasn't done them any good.
