They want $lice of the occu-pie. 500G fight at Zuccotti
Source: New York Post

Even in Zuccotti Park, greed is good.

Occupy Wall Street’s Finance Committee has nearly $500,000 in the bank, and donations continue to pour in -- but its reluctance to share the wealth with other protesters is fraying tempers.

Some drummers -- incensed they got no money to replace or safeguard their drums after a midnight vandal destroyed their instruments Wednesday -- are threatening to splinter off.

“F--k Finance. I hope Mayor Bloomberg gets an injunction and demands to see the movement’s books. We need to know how much money we really have and where it’s going,” said a frustrated Bryan Smith, 45, who joined OWS in Lower Manhattan nearly three weeks ago from Los Angeles, where he works in TV production.

1. Freak out over drums. Fucking crybabies.
Should not have left your drums in a spot to be vandalized.

Besides nobody at OWS really needs a drummer. Less narcissism, not more! OWS is not your career launch point losers!

Unless of course, you intend to stay the course, however winding a road it leads.

Edited on Sun Oct-23-11 06:43 PM by ChandlerJr
you had better hope the the finance committee has set up the account properly and that every penny collected and disbursed is accounted for. You better believe that the IRS and possibly even Justice Dept. has or is going to take an interest in the finances.

This ain't no Koolaid stand.

On edit: You need names and SS# or a tax ID# to open an account. I wouldn't want my name anywhere near that.

4. Interesting source of this article
and I am concerned that this is part of a ploy to cause dissension. Murdoch's stench is all over the article being owner of the NY Boast.

OWS certainly isn't about this.

7. Excellent point.
All issues are hashed out at the twice daily General Assemblies. I cannot imagine this issue would not have been discussed, since anyone can bring up an issue.

8. If it wasn't for the NY Post,
NYC wouldn't have anything to wrap fish, line bird cages, line cat boxes, and pick up dog poo with.
That's all it's good for.
There is not one unbiased article in that paper. Don't believe a word of that Murdock rag.

We call it the NY Pissed around here, or the NY Pissy Offensive Stupid Tabloid.

That's why this gets one of my rare unrecs.

26. It goes without saying that the NY Post isn't exactly pro-OWS
Everybody familiar with the Post knows that. But on the other hand . . .

I do think this type of story is legitimate news, even if this particular story isn't all that valuable. But it does tap into some interesting questions/concerns about the movement.

1) Leadership and decision making:

In a loose-knit movement without a single leadership figure, who is in charge? Who gets to disburse funds, make decisions, plot strategies etc. Does the leadership speak for the entire movement? Most of the movement? Some of the movement? How can consensus be achieved and how can disputes such as these be resolved? Those are questions worth asking.

2) Donors:

People who give money to OWS have a right to know how that money is going to be spent. Donors are probably varied in their reasons for giving money and some may have very different ideas than others about how it should be spent (or saved).

3) Money as a larger theme:

The movement itself is very much about money. After all, they didn't pick Wall Street out of a hat. While there are a lot of different groups/people there, one thing that ties them together is the notion that wealth is not properly distributed in this country. Therefore, how the movement itself distributes and manages its own $$ is relevant.

29. Huh?
Almost everyone on this thread is slamming the article. Though I pointed out that it taps into real issues, I also pointed out the obvious fact that the Post is anti-OWS.

I don't think the intent of the article was for the left to say: 'Fuck the NY Post.' Because that's what this thread seems to be saying.
