SAN FRANCISCO -- A red-tailed hawk that had been shot in the head with a nail gun was doing well after it was captured over the weekend in Golden Gate Park and transferred to a veterinary hospital, officials said Sunday.
The juvenile bird was trapped Saturday evening inside the San Francisco Botanical Garden and transported to the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley in San Jose.
"They are reporting the bird is in good shape, thin, but very active," said Rebecca Dmytryk, executive director of WildRescue, the Monterey group that captured the hawk. "The nail dislodged during transport, and it suffered no other trauma."
WildRescue has been trying to capture the wounded hawk since bird lovers spotted it a week ago with a nail jutting through the front of its head into its cheek. It was finally captured in a wire mesh trap known as a bal-chatri, which is used especially for birds of prey, Dmytryk said.
