To some degree, the system does benefit US, and that is especially true for the parts of the 99% who are not in the 80%.
Beyond that, though, the system benefits many more, even people in the bottom 20%. At least in many parts of the country, we, that is all the people, have: public libraries, public schools, public pools, decent streets, decent roads, interstate highways, state parks, national parks, city parks, community centers, public fire protection, public sanitation, public drinking water (often free in fountains), public trash removal, etc.
None of those are perfect, nor does their presence justify the last 30+ years of tilting the field to favor the rich, nor the virtual purchase of the government by the top 20%, but I take a little umbrage at the notion that the system does NOT benefit US, like everybody who is not in the top 1% has NOTHING.
I am in the 80% and the system has benefitted me, but I should have a government that represents people like me.
