The Joy of Freepers: Is this some alien death ray?
I just saw something unusual in the night sky, and was wondering if anyone knows what this is/what caused it. This was observed at about 9:30 PM above the Ithaca, NY area. There were several long, wide areas of pale red light (perhaps something to do with light clouds??). They had a NW/SE orientation, and appeared to be drifting in an east to west direction. The sun had been down for about 3 hours, and there wasn't any moon. I've lived here for 45 years and never seen it before. It was quite pretty, but puzzling!

3. Don't laugh. It might be an honest question. At the very least...
...no matter how naieve, it was well asked.

The lights at NY's latitude might be relatively common, but without a dark sky view, they may well never have seen.

I certainly recall my first sight of the Auroura Australis. The entire southern horizon from SW to SE was glowing neon red. I thought it was a bushfire.

5. I'm originally from Vermont, I miss the Northern Lights more than I can say.
But it seemed like everyone knew about them, they were discussed in school and predicted sightings were always included in our news and weather broadcasts.

Of course, we didn't have Faux News back then either.

Maybe the government can launch a nuclear missle to destroy it! Save the freepers from the scary lights!

7. In case the other lost balls in the high weeds happened to wonder, this one's NOT a scientist...

To: ggraziano
Magnetic Storm?? I believe I read somewhere earlier that a Coronal Mass Ejection from the Sun hit our magnetic field earlier today. I'm not a scientist, but if what I read is true, could be related..??

8. Damn, I wish I'd known they were visible so far south tonight.
I'm in NY, roughly on the same latitude as Ithaca.

11. Could be something Obama is using to attack Freepers
After all, they never saw his real birth certificate. Who knows if his buddies are coming to finish the job?

They should be a bit more polite over there.

17. There was a large solar flare that allowed the northern lights to be seen
in 12 different states that normally never see it.

There are tons of beautiful pics on the internet..google it.
