4. When it comes down to TPTB vs the DFHs...
Ain't no politician coming down on the side of the DFHs, it wouldn't be prudent.

Hippie punching is still America's favorite bipartisan fun activity.

8. Excellent point.
At first, Oakland officials seemed to welcome the Occupiers. Then we started to hear all these bogus reports about rats 'n' crime 'n' stuff. And now this -- basically Kent State without the deaths. Wonder what happened along the way? :tinfoilhat:

9. I guess she needed to be tough on someone
She refuses to deal with gang activity, so she needed someone to arrest to show she's tough.

11. You must mean "she refuses to deal with gang activity on ex-Chief Batts' terms"

What would Mayor RandySF do, short of restricting people's civil liberties through curfews and such?

5. It may be time for a new phase to this effort.
There seems to be too much media coverage on the whole camping thing, the tents, the "makeshift kitchens," homespun libraries, sleeping bags, etc., and not enough focus on the purpose of the protests.

The time to influence the news cycle is during working hours on weekdays, not doing drum circles in the evening after a meal of tofu and rice. It may be a feel good thing, but the media just aren't going to keep covering that kind of stuff. I'd like to see more permit-issued marches with some of that creative signage, and more articulate "everypersons" making their case to a reporter during the daytime.

This is, in essence, a "sit in" like in days of old. The fact of the matter is that even if the police ignored the behavior, in most parts of the country, it is going to get cold as hell in the coming months and the effort will shrink in terms of numbers if they don't try something new. Also, and nothing against homeless people who are sometimes unmedicated and have substance abuse issues (gotta get that caveat in there), the longer these sites exist, the more these dislocated individuals are drawn to them, because it's a way to hide in plain sight, even if they don't give a flying fig about politics or the issues presented by the OWS efforts. The Boston site has had a few problems with those guys.

I don't really know what would be the most effective "next" strategy, but I think it's time for something new.

6. Our "leaders" are fools. Thank God for great flaws in those with great power.
Flaws can be exploited and flaws can lead to self destruction.
