1. Here is hoping that Van, the fiery compelling radical I used to know, reverts to his activists roots
and eschews the mainstream political path he's walked this past decade. If anyone can assist in bringing clarity, fortitude, and structure to Occupy Oakland, it is Van.

8. I admire him, as well. Years ago, I worked with him on many activist campaigns.
We are both verbally adroit and physically expressive with our hands. We used to crack each other sometimes with our expressive intensity that, to a casual observer, might appear that we were totally at odds when, in fact, we were totally in agreement but eager to toss information at each other.

I just think he's a better leader on the street than advocating on the side of the ballot box.

2. Rubber bullets are not as harmless as they are meant to be.

Nasty bruises at best, worse damage if they hit an eye or facial bone.

6. I visited Occupy Oakland last Friday night with my daughter (we live in San Francisco).
Edited on Tue Oct-25-11 11:40 PM by Luminous Animal
It was a wonderful experience. Well organized and clean with hay strewn about walkways constructed (with shipping pallets) to protect the grass. No filth and trash like some of the media has been reporting and the city is using for justification to "clean" them out. There were intense political conversations going on everywhere and a wonderful rapping vocalist.

It breaks my heart to see this evolving community (in a very troubled city) destroyed.

9. Why is Oakland a troubled city? Is there, like, real crime and stuff
that needs to be policed? Money that needs to be spent somewhere besides on teargassing people in a park?

10. From my point of view, there is too much policing on so many levels.
I used to be involved with Cop Watch in Oakland (videotaping cops interactions with the members of the black & brown community) and the cops attitude has long been more paramilitary than to protect and serve.

16. All this is making me see where the safest areas are

as far as protection of Constitutional rights.

Albany, NY is looking good so far.

Atlanta? Oakland? Seems more Third World out there - assaulting babies and elderly Americans. Sickening.

Shame. Shame. Shame.

IF it happens in Oakland, it could spread to other places too, with the cops just being thugs, with no regard for the law, or the constitutional rights of fellow Americans.

25. Hell, you don't need a Ph.D. in Sociology to understand that we
probably already have 50% of the cops on our side, even if they can't publicly out themselves just yet.

But if I were in the top ranks of any police department, I'd be starting to get a bit nervous right about now and looking over my shoulders a bit, not for infiltration from outside the PD, but inside the PD for missions and unit cohesion to start breaking down.

The reason the NYPD had to use white-shirted supervisors like the infamous Tony Baloney (managerial rank) may be that the upper leadership couldn't trust their own rank and file.
