Oakland Mayor Jean Quan sets up First Amendment cage
October 25, 2011
7:30 am

Statement from Mayor Jean Quan about
today’s enforcement action

Many Oaklanders support the goals of the national Occupy Wall Street movement. We maintained daily communication with the protest0rs in Oakland.

However, over the last week it was apparent that neither the demonstrators nor the City could maintain safe or sanitary conditions, or control the ongoing vandalism. Frank Ogawa Plaza will continue to be open as a free speech area from 6 am to 10 pm.

We want to thank the police, fire, public works and other employees who worked over the last week to peacefully close the encampment. We also thank the majority of the protestors who peacefully complied with city officials.

I commend Chief Jordan for a generally peaceful resolution to a situation that deteriorated and concerned our community. His leadership was critical in the successful execution of this operation. City Administrator Deanna Santana developed the plan and secured mutual aid from other departments and the State of California. She will direct departmental teams, including safety, public works, communications, to restore conditions at the Plaza so that it is available for public use.

The City welcomes all Oaklanders to continue to use the Plaza during daylight hours for peaceful protest.

6. they already are
you should have heard the report on NPR this morning. the reporter had seen the wounds from the rubber bullets himself and still would not say that they were used, only that they were allegedly used. then he compared the protests to the riots following Oscar Grant's murder as if only the actions of the protesters were relevant, not what the police did. it was kind of sickening imo. if i wasn't so cynical of the news i might have thought that the occupiers were hanging around in their own shit with disease running rampant and violence brewing among themselves. he made a point of saying that police and even EMS crews were not allowed into the area by the occupiers. i don't know if that is true or not. but that was not "alleged" by this reporter it was stated as fact.

3. There was a recall effort for Jean Quan already underway
Before she attacked the Occupy protesters. Bad move Jean, now the whole country wants your ass out of the mayor's office.

http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Recal-Jean-Quan-Effort-Begins-in-Oakland-132533668.html

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan was busy Tuesday morning cleaning up an "unsanitary" Frank Ogawa Plaza but her detractors have been busy for a long time.

A group of Oakland residents who are not happy with the job the new mayor is doing are trying to drum up support to get Quan recalled from office.

The Oakland Tribune reports that a recall effort is officially under way. Notice was filed with the Oakland City Clerk's office and now the organizers of the effort must seek enough signatures on a petition to push it forward.

4. "commend Chief Jordan for a generally peaceful resolution"? Maybe she should watch the video
that hopefully will go viral:

Oakland protesters return to help a downed woman and get fired upon. unbelievable!

8. She's lying. I listened to what was happening and
watched it on livestream as well as reading tweets from people who were right there.

This time people were INJURED. She needs to resign. I hope there is a national movement to remove her as she is not fit for office. Lying politicians should not be tolerated.

She was away when this happened, probably on purpose.
