(10-26) 14:32 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A homeless man in West Oakland found the 122-year-old bell stolen from St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, the Archdiocese of San Francisco said.
The 2.6-ton bell was stolen sometime over the last month, possibly by metal thieves, police said.
The bell was covered in rags at a salvage yard near the Port of Oakland, George Wesolek, communications director for the Archdiocese.
"I guess it was a pretty messy industrial area," he said. "It was a salvage yard so we're glad we found it when we did. It might have been just minutes or hours from being destroyed."
