City of Fresno to move ahead to destroy tent city of 5000 Homeless, 10/27 7am. Action needed
Please share this others. Come to Fresno if you are near by.
And Call the Mayor's office and post comments on the Fresno Bee and news stations if you don't.

Fresno CA's unemployment has been over 15% for the last 10 years. there are over 3000 school age children living in the tent cities.

Call to Action - Thursday at 7 a.m.!

The City of Fresno intends to begin a massive eviction of homeless people from their modest shelters, starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday, October 27. Your presence in solidarity with your homeless brothers and sisters could stop one of the worst human rights violation in the history of this city. Just as the weather is getting colder, the City of Fresno is going to chase the homeless from one vacant lot to another, taking their blankets, tents, and clothes. You and I can stop them.

We need everyone reading this message to arrive no later than 7 a.m. at Santa Fe street, just south of Ventura. Santa Fe is the street that Amtrak is on. The homeless is south of the Amtrak station on the other side of Ventura

For background about this struggle, see:

http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/10/22/18694453.php

To see video from today's press conference at City Hall, calling on the city to call off the evictions, see:

http://www.indybay.org/newsitems/2011/10/26/18695320.php

City officials lie when they say they have resources for the homeless they are evicting from the tent cities.
City of Fresno, Caltrans, US Railroad enforcement, have again and again destroyed these people's cardboard shacks, tents, and toss away their personal possessions.

Contacting Mayor Swearengin and your City Council Member:
Basic message – (#1 is the most important now.) A short clear message is best.
1. I oppose the City’s plan to evict homeless residents of the encampments in downtown Fresno beginning on Thursday. I’m asking the City to allow the homeless people to stay in the encampments until there is a workable plan to provide basic shelter.

2. Until that solution is reached, provide them with water, toilets, and regular trash collection.
Information on reaching Mayor Swearengin and your city council member is available at www.fresno.gov. Or see below.

Calling Mayor Swearengin and your city council member at (559) 621-8000:

Phone may ring several times. A recording will answer “Administrative Offices for the City of Fresno…” and you will be put on hold until someone answers. That person can also take a message for your city councilmember so you should be prepared to ask that the message go to both the mayor and your city council member. If you don’t know the name of your city council member check first at http://www.fresno.gov/Government/CityCouncil/CouncilLocator.htm .

Emailing Mayor Swearengin, your city council member, and all the city council members:

It’s easy from the City’s website. Go to www.fresno.gov , from the home page click on “Mayor’s Office” or “City Council” on the left of the screen. You can make your feelings known to all the city council members via email. Not hard when you cut and paste. They want to know how people in the city feel about issues of the day.

Tomorrow will be a critical day for taking action. It is important for as many people as possible to be at the homeless encampment at Santa Fe Ave. just south of Ventura St. at 7:00 a.m. for a strong show of support for the residents. I feel confident that the media will be there to record the action. Bring your cameras and homemade signs or simply stand in solidarity, prepared to witness City action.

The City has said that the evictions could start at 7 a.m., but given all the publicity who knows what will happen. If I hear of changes before tomorrow morning, I’ll email you. For now we should assume that the City might come before 7 a.m. so if you’re an early riser don’t hesitate to come early. My guess is that the City will stall and do nothing tomorrow, but some of us should plan to spend the day at the encampment. If nothing happens, others can go the following day. Evictions are scheduled for other downtown encampments beginning on Tuesday, November 1.

4. the City of Fresno has been attacking the Homeless for at least 10 years
So many attacks eventhough a Federal Judge ruled against the City.

I was reviewing this today and can't believe how many articles Mike Rhodes has documented and wrote about the City's inhumane attack on the Homeless.

The local corporate Media does not report the truth of what the City does to the Homeless.

It made me sick all over again as I read through just the 1st paragraphs of these articles.

This is a long list but I just need people to see what is happening to others in one of the richest states in the country.

8. the Progressives and Homeless in Fresno are pleading for help at the Press Conference
Edited on Wed Oct-26-11 11:18 PM by annm4peace
Itis sickening.. why should citizens have to plead with their government to provide basic human rights?
Why does the State and Federal Government allow the City of Fresno to continue to abuse the Homeless, the most Vunerable?
Where is Sen.Boxer and Sen Feinstein? Where is their demand for social justice ?
If you contact their office they say there is nothing they can do. But the can do something if this abuse was in another country.
It is shameful.

Homeless people and their supporters held a press conference at Fresno City Hall today calling on the mayor to stop the plan to conduct massive evictions of the homeless, which are scheduled to begin Thursday, October 27 at 7 a.m. on Santa Fe, just south of Ventura. A video of each of the press conference speakers is below. Below: Mike Rhodes (video 2:31 minutes)

the 2nd video is of a member of the Communication Workers of America says: "These were folks who were gainfully employed at one time..one of them was actually a member of our Union, Commuications Workers of America.. a lot of these folks are displaced workers.. until the cities is able to provide housing for them.. we are not going to let them push them out of their encampment." (I hope more Union members in fresno step up and speak out)

9. from today's Press conference.
Statement by Mike Rhodes, editor of the Community Alliance newspaper

The City of Fresno’s plan for massive evictions of the homeless, starting Thursday morning, is heartless and cruel. Destroying their modest shelter and chasing them with a stick from one vacant lot or sidewalk to another will do nothing to help their lives or to end homelessness in Fresno.

Instead of making homeless people’s lives worse, what the City of Fresno should do is to provide a safe and legal place for them to live, that includes the same public services all of us take for granted - drinking water, a trash bin that is emptied regularly, and a place to go to the bathroom.

The city has a choice. They can make homeless people’s lives more difficult by destroying what little safety and security they have or they can help make their difficult lives better by providing them with basic public services. The ironic thing is that it would cost the city less to help the homeless, rather than hurt them. City officials bring shame to our community by conducting this eviction of the homeless.

Not only are city officials wrong to evict the homeless, they are lying to us about their motives. They say that they have offered homeless people housing, but they refuse it. There are homeless people here today that will tell you, in their own words, that this assertion by the city is a lie. The city says that they are evicting the homeless because of construction projects, when they know that most of the encampments are not located near a construction project. They used that same lie two years ago when they evicted the homeless from the H street encampment. No construction ever took place, but the homeless were evicted and today the vacant lot sits empty with a barbed wire fence around it.

If the city proceeds with this eviction tomorrow morning, there will be resistance, both from the homeless and people who support human rights. It is not too late - we call on the City of Fresno to call off this ill-conceived plan that will do nothing to end homelessness and only make the lives of the homeless more difficult.

11. Please, Please. Please make the call
and if you are in a Union, call them and have them call Fresno, CA chapter and ask them "Why aren't you standing with our out of work brothers and sisters in the tent cities??

Only one Union came out and that was the CWA.. where are the Teamsters? Where are Carpenters Union? the Pipefitters ?

you know out of those 5000 people living in the tent cities there are union members.

17. and just where the hell are these folks supposed to go?
They are already living in tents and trying to survive the best way they know how to. The city should be trying to figure out how to feed and help them get jobs, not tear their "homes" down!
