Statement from Mayor Jean Quan about today’s enforcement action

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan

Statement from Mayor Jean Quan about
today’s enforcement action
...
Many Oaklanders support the goals of the national Occupy Wall Street movement. We maintained daily communication with the protest0rs in Oakland.

However, over the last week it was apparent that neither the demonstrators nor the City could maintain safe or sanitary conditions, or control the ongoing vandalism. Frank Ogawa Plaza will continue to be open as a free speech area from 6 am to 10 pm.

We want to thank the police, fire, public works and other employees who worked over the last week to peacefully close the encampment. We also thank the majority of the protestors who peacefully complied with city officials.

I commend Chief Jordan for a generally peaceful resolution to a situation that deteriorated and concerned our community. His leadership was critical in the successful execution of this operation . City Administrator Deanna Santana developed the plan and secured mutual aid from other departments and the State of California. She will direct departmental teams, including safety, public works, communications, to restore conditions at the Plaza so that it is available for public use.

The City welcomes all Oaklanders to continue to use the Plaza during daylight hours for peaceful protest.

1. I think I would take up chewing tabaco so I could spit it in her eye.
Clint Eastwood lives nearby, maybe he can do it for me.

2. And as you can see from the FB responses...
She's got about 10,000 people telling her what a total failure she is.

That response was written by one of her communications underlings. I seriously haven't
read anything so crass by someone so oblivious. Quan is in the middle of a PR storm
from hell--with the entire country watching.

And she dares to suggest that this protest had a "generally peaceful solution" when
an Iraqi war vet lies in critical condition in a medically induced coma after being
critically injured with rubber bullets.

WTF is Quan doing?

4. Vandalism, huh?
I'll bet the commendable Chief Jordan left some .22 shells laying around so that he can 'find' them later to prove OWS = terrorists.

5. "...and concerned our community."
She just gave herself away, right there. "Our," like she's part of some exclusive club.

The people who run the city of Oakland have been exposed as woefully inadequate. The scars of these victims will last a lifetime.

6. Is Oakland Mayor Jean Quan a fucking idiot?
Guns, batons and teargas against unarmed peaceful protestors. She should be fired by the people. Forced to step down.

7. Goebbels would be proud of her
This is a textbook example of the "big lie," which is apparently SOP for every government official from top to bottom in this country these days.

But I don't think the principle works so well in these days of instant mass communication from unregulated sources. We could be seeing more than one paradigm shift coming out of the OWS movement.

OTOH, government and the corps are working hard to control and regulate the Internet and the freedom of private individuals to record and communicate police actions. How these information wars end up may well be the most critical question of our time...

9. Quan's Advisors Misled Her
It sounds like Mayor Quan seriously thought she could escape political damage by being out of town when the OPD action took place. Maybe she took them at their word that they would be well-behaved and professional. She should have known better than to trust the OPD. What a chump!

There's a long history here. OPD didn't just become unmanageable in the past decade; they've been out of control since the 60's and probably earlier than that. Quan might not have realized what she got herself into. She really does sound like a nice person. However, she's still a chump.

Oakland's cops revert to type.

11. "Successful execution....?" Poor choice of words given how a Marine
may yet die of being shot in the head nearly point blank by OPD.

12. Ah, the generally peacefulness of critically injuring people, destroying their belongings, and more.
That's what to call resolution.

19. I believe Jordan is actually an 'interrim chief". He also sounds
like a real piece of work in the 'clueless department' too, based on reportage I read about his presser earlier today.
