Perry may pass on debates

CNN) - Arguing the election cycle has too many presidential debates, Rick Perry's top spokesman said the Texas governor could use more time with voters instead of taking the stage with Republican opponents.

"We're about 60 days away from votes being cast," communications director Ray Sullivan said on CNN's "John King, USA" Wednesday. "The candidates need to spend time in Iowa doing those town halls and spending a lot more time with the voters, who oftentimes have the best questions and press the candidates the hardest."

Citing the dozen-plus debates in the works, Sullivan added: "There's no way that the candidates can do all those debates."

Perry, whose poll numbers have slid after a series of uneven debate performances, made headlines Tuesday when he described taking part as a "mistake."

3. I'm surprised he participated in any after the first one.
Rick Perry is not a smart man. His handlers know this and don't usually allow him this many opportunities to prove that fact to the public. He managed to completely avoid debating Bill White in 2010.

I kind of figured old Dave Carney would trot Perry out for that first debate just to show off his shiny mane and then immediately stable him afterwards. The fact that that clodhopper was given more opportunities to clomp his hoof and whinny like a fool makes me wonder if old Dave is losing his touch.

14. They still think that tough-talkin' good-ol'-boy BS plays well with the whole USA.
In the meantime, all we can do is remember the disaster that was Dubya. And THIS guy makes Dubya look like Buckminster Fuller.

5. W actually CHOSE him?
I didn't realize that's how Texas politics worked. Goodness gracious.

He reminds me so much of Bush it pisses me off. That stupid accent, and that stupid way they stand there, with their legs all cowboy-y and stupid... I could not endure that again. I could not.

6. Karl chose him
They needed someone that fit the GOP/Johnny Bravo governor suit so he could slip into it when Dubya won the presidency.

Karl's the one that initially groomed Perry, convinced him to switch parties and run for Ag Commissioner. Brought in Dave Carney to handle/manage him. When Perry was running for Lieutenant Governor, Carney wanted to "go negative" but Karl didn't want that because he was on that "compassionate conservative" kick. Carney and Rove became enemies after that and now they're battling behinds the scenes for Super-PAC munnies.

10. That's right.
And now Rove and the Bush family are working actively against Perry's ascension to the GOP presidential nomination. There's been a little bad blood between them for awhile (The Bush blue bloods think Perry is an ignorant hick; imagine that).

9. That's because it doesn't.
Work that way. Now of course a case can be made that the voters don't actually do the choosing (DREs, etc.) but the governor does not pick his running mate in Texas (which I believe is the OP's contention).

I still hold the central assertion Perry is dumber than W, although the former has better hair!

17. Sorry Rick, but too late
Everyone who watched the debates already knows what a doofus you are, and being a cowardly bully and avoiding the rest of the debates won't help your dismal poll numbers. The damage has been done, that horse done left the barn the moment you answered your first debate question.
