AFA's "One Million Moms" Vs Target
The American Family Association has handed off their campaign against Target to their new One Million Moms group. Last week the AFA denounced the retail giant for advertising alongside a Trevor Project PSA on LGBT suicide.

The Trevor Helpline promotion aired during the "Beat It" episode of Teen Nick's Degrassi series when teen Riley, the openly gay football captain and starting quarterback, declined reparative therapy for his homosexuality. Not only is Teen Nick now featuring a show that encourages the nation's youth to embrace alternate lifestyles, but the family retail chain Target Corporation is helping through sponsorship. Upon discovering that Target Corporation is one of the main advertisers during the shameful and inappropriate program Degrassi, OMM is disappointed and the retail chain needs to be held accountable. At least three Target advertisements appeared during each episode of Degrassi this past weekend. They are openly recruiting teens and children to become 'gay' on a program that also promotes the transgender and homosexual lifestyle.

1. My edited version of their letter. Feel free to copy
As a mother and grandmother, I was delighted to learn that Target is a leading advertiser during a television show that affirms and recognizes homosexual and transgender persons as normal and worthy, to an audience that is almost exclusively young teens and children.

It was equally laudable that Target advertised three times during the October 17, 2011, 9:30 pm "Beat It" episode of Degrassi when Teen Nick aired a promotion for TheTrevorHelpline.org. The promo stated in part "The Trevor Helpline is a free and confidential service that's open for gay and questioning youth. Be proud of who you are."

In past airings of certain Degrassi episodes, MTV included a free promo for PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) which directed kids to an organization that would encourage our youth to recognize and respect a different sexual identity, whether their own or someone else's, that may stay with them for life.

Not only is Teen Nick affirming the rights of homosexual and transgender persons in the content of the program itself but also includes promotions during Degrassi which lead America's youth toward, not away from, respecting all individuals regardless of sexual orientation.

Target is the ONLY major retailer that is advertising on this show. This is a point that I will remember when choosing where to shop.

I sincerely hope that Target will continue advertising during this show.

4. When you send a message through an astroturf email site, do you think the
recipient usually notices that you've edited it? My guess is that when they're getting a batch of form emails, the most they do is count them - how many are coming from the same site - and so your message from the AFA site just gets counted as another one of them.

It would be better, I think, to write from your own address to avoid getting lumped in with the nutters...

6. The moms need to get a little perspective: Target & its CEO have donated hundred$ of thousand$
to anti-gay candidates. (two notables are Tom Emmer & Michele Bachmann)

7. So let me get this, er, straight
The American Family Association, along with their catspaw One Million Moms, are upset that someone voluntarily declined "reparative" therapy for his sexual orientation, is that correct? Do they then feel that people should be coerced into "reparative" therapy, whether they want it or not? How much coercion is appropriate, according to AFA and OMM? Mandatory attendance at sessions? Should the reluctant patient be confined during attendance? Are shackles enough, or do they need to tie the person to a chair? Is it appropriate to have medical personnel stand guard over the patient, or is an armed guard needed? If the patient attempts to flee anyway, can he expect to be merely tackled, or will the guard be authorized to employ deadly force?

I got questions, man.

8. I predict that this will be every bit as successful
as the same morans' "boycott" of Disney a few years back for extending benefits to the domestic partners of employees. How did that work out again? What maroons.

9. I've been boycotting Target because of the CEO support for
Bachmann. I guess Target has decided to play good cop, bad cop as a way of maintaining business. And the consumer can decide when Target is the good cop (as in sponsoring Degrassi) or the bad cop (as in sending money to Bachmann). Or vice versa if you're a fundie.
