As flood waters continued to swell near Bangkok on Thursday, Thai residents had more to fear than burst dikes and property damage.
Authorities have warned residents of the capital that crocodiles have ridden the rising flood waters to freedom. One Australian broadcaster reported “thousands” had escaped. More tempered reports put the number around 100 in Ayutthaya province, north of Bangkok.
Still, the spectre of encountering a loose crocodile only compounds the devastation and danger wrought by Thailand’s worst flooding in half a century.
“This is the worst thing — knowing that there might be a crocodile or snake there waiting for you when go back to check your home,” one resident, Patchara Promkaew, 43, told the
