8. I checked Google Images -- and the picture is getting around
But nobody identifies where it came from.

(To do a reverse image search through Google Images, first get the URL for the image. In Firefox, you do this by right-clicking on the image and then clicking on "Copy Image Location." Then go to Google Images, click on the little camera icon at the right of the search window, and paste the URL in the popup. Google will display images that are the same or in some way similar.)

29. You sure are making a lot of assumptions here.
I guess we see what we will see. To me, she looks like the aggressor and I don't see any signs of him assaulting her first.

And some of the freedom riders did wind up killed because of the non-violent approach of the movement. They were told never to strike first, even in the face of overwhelming aggression.

They want you to hit them first. It then provides cover for their use of force.

17. It is, and I agree. But a kick to a would-be rapist's balls (for instance) don't strike me the...
...same way as the rape. They're both, technically, violence. Agreed. But nothing exists in a contextual vacuum.

23. There is no context for this photo
But I guess we should all assume something not in evidence.

I never said people shouldn't defend themselves, but there are no visible signs of an altercation on the woman. We don't know anything about this particular incident. Maybe it's like a Rorschach test.

34. Impossible to tell. For all I know she was wielding it and he was taking it from her.
Maybe he was "wielding" it, or maybe simply holding it.

There is not enough information in the image to tell.

And the whole thing could simply be a fake.

38. 12 Angry Men is a motion picture of high technical quality
This is a shitty still photo that could easily be staged or photoshopped, or worse. It's not possible from the information presented here to determine what was actually happening.

33. And how do you know he was trying to hit her?
He could have been holding it and she grabbed it to prevent him from hitting her as she struck him. That's just as plausible as anything else. I've gone to protests and the cops all hold batons, but I can't just grab one and say he was planning to use it on me.

Frankly, I have no idea what's really going on, which is what I said all along. I just won't applaud an ambiguous photo depicting violence. I guess I am just a bad liberal and an apologist for authority.

37. This is just a friendly chat about what can reasonably be deduced from a simple picture.
No reason to throw your hands in the air over and storm away over it.

There are two figures, one dressed in combat gear one in civilian clothing. The figure in combat gear is holding a baton or baton-like item with a grip for swinging while the civilian is gripping it with the weakest possible grip- a defensive one. Furthermore, she is gripping the object with the arm her purse is on and it's sliding down her arm- hardly an advantageous position either by the hand she's using (statistically, her "off" hand) and using an arm which has a purse sliding down it.

Throughout our conversation on the matter you've made statements or insinuations as you do above: "That's just as plausible as anything else."

Plausible is generally understood to mean "Seeming reasonable or probable."

I'm not sure what word you should be using but "plausible" probably isn't it.

Rosa Parks vs. Sergeant Schultz. But in real life they're happily married. Both are schoolteachers at a Christian academy.

18. The Assumptions On This Thread Are Interesting
Without having any background information on the story many posters so far seem to think it's perfectly acceptable to punch a dude in the beak. After all, she's a minority female and he appears to be a while, male member of the authoritarian establishment.

Maybe I'm just being devil's advocate.

27. Your only comment was that you thought the picture was "great"
I see an image of shitty technical quality and obviously questionable veracity, with no context other than it came from Facebook.

I don't think it's great in any sense of the word. It's a lousy picture portraying an act of indeterminable moral value.
