Quan apologizes to protesters for outcome of Tuesday night
OAKLAND, Calif. -- Mayor Jean Quan released a written statement Thursday night addressing "Occupy Oakland" demonstrators inside city hall.

Quan apologized in her statement for writing the address rather than speaking directly to the crowd as had been expected. She said that she had planned to speak at the "Speak Out" segment of tonight's Occupy Oakland assembly, but it was canceled.

The mayor in her statement apologized for the outcome of Tuesday night's demonstration -- where a heavy police presence kept protesters out of the plaza with tear gas, smoke grenades and rubber bullets.

"It was not what anyone hoped for, ultimately it was my responsibility, and I apologize for what happened," the statement read.

She said city officials have started an investigation into the use of force by police Tuesday night.

10. She was told she would have to wait her turn to speak, just like everyone else
well, she was apparently too busy to wait.

12. ahhh..yes, the democratising "stack"...
that IS rather pointedly funny, tho.
Gotta love that they refused to be intimidated by power and forced her into
a "first come, first served" process.
And telling that she did not have the smarts to stay and wait.
THAT would have been a brilliant political move on her part, I would have waited, if I were her.

4. "We ask you not to camp overnight in the Plaza"
That was one of 4 things she asked of the demonstrators.
We'll see how that works.

6. Free speech in the Plaza doesn't, can't, won't happen between 10 pm and 6 am.
according to Quan's letter.

I still don't think she gets it. Going through motions for the MEdia. All hat and no cattle, as they say in Texas.

8. It's like Bush's "Free Speech Zones" with a clock.
The nation is a free speech zone...when government dictates when and where we can speak, it's not "Free Speech."
