Paul Ryan sound bite on Tom Ashcroft's "On Point" program
Source: National Public Radio

"Class resentments don't make America stronger, they make America weaker."

No link yet.

So this is what's wrong with our economy -- the serfs need to stop voicing their resentments, and just continue (silently) being the most productive / overworked lower class in the developed world.

1. Don't resent your betters, peon.
Be happy they let you have your minimum wage job and your crappy to nonexistent health care.

As long as it's from the top coming down. It's only a problem for Ryan when it bubbles up from the bottom.

8. In other words
Paul Ryan is feeling the heat of the public's outrage over the status quo.

Paul likes the $350.00 a bottle wine

19. Well, heck, give the guy a break -- if you were as homely
as he is, you'd drink too. And you might as well drink the good stuff, since the lobbyists are paying for it.

21. Dagnabbit -- went googling for the link to the radio show site,
and discover the guy's name is Tom Ashbrook, not Ashcroft.

The unforgettable sound track of "Let The Eagle Soar" is still reverberating in my head, apparently.

so sorry I screwed up on this. It's such a great graphic.

24. Did you mean to post the corrected graphic?
I'd still like to put it up on my Facebook page --

Ashbrook is always cutting people off before they can get their complete thought out -- then he "summarizes" what he considers to be their point and oversimplifies ideas to the point of absurdity, to fit into some previously conceived idea of his own -- and his idea supply reminds me of the little plastic molds that come with Play-Dough --

Frequently, he is so rude, I'll just turn the darn show off. He loves the sound of his own voice more than anything and I'm surprised the network bigwigs don't tell him to shut up once in awhile and let the guests / callers talk for 30 seconds straight.

My NPR membership donation earns its keep, though -- I do love "On The Media" and "This American Life" and Garrison, of course (Almanac and Prairie Home).

there's a few really good shows we don't get here- Writers Almanac, Says You and Whad'ya Know. KWMU dropped Michael Feldman for Wait, Wait- Don't Lie To Me.

and the historical-biographical-literary information is much expanded from what goes out on the air.

I really like Wait, Wait -- Paula Poundstone was terrible as a panelist when she first started and now I think she's the funniest person on the show. But I do wish someone would explain to me why they bother to have P. J. O'Rourke on. What a drysocket.

11. Taking that single sentence in this situation...
... and he is correct. Class resentment does make America weaker. Wonder how it got there.

Have I got news for you Mr. Ryan. It has gone beyond resentment now. It is getting to the range of loathing, hating, despising and just absolutely disgusted at how us pee-ons are getting treated these days by the powers that be.

When the wealth disparity opens up into the size something that blows the Grand Canyon away, no wonder people at the bottom are angry.

There is no more shutting up Mr. Ryan. Wake up and smell the coffee.

not the wealthy. How helpful of Ryan to point this out.

23. Probably not a matter of "like" or "not like" . . . that would imply it's personal.
It's likely far worse . . . that they just plain and simple don't CARE about them or what happens to them. At ALL.

15. he's right with that quote, but...
there are two ways to proceed to try to eliminate class resentments:

1. enact policies that address the causes of this resentment.

2. yell at people to shut up.

unfortunately too many politicians (and their supporters) in this country think 2 actually works.

17. I finally figured out -- this quote bugs me so much because it equates
"a strong America" with "an America in which the wealthiest become wealthier at an ever-increasing rate at the expense of everyone else."

Anyone not wealthy is just chaff on the wind, not at all part of his "America."

It's really hard for me to see how people like this ever get elected.

18. Oh yeah?
Then why are rethugs calling unemployed and union people "lazy, over-compensated, worthless POS"? Why are the rethug's like Limpbaugh, Coulter, InSanity, etc cursing out democrats everyday? Until the "moderate" - if any of you still have bones at all - vehemently denounce these rethugs, I don't want to hear anything about bi-partisanship b*llsh*t!

25. Yeah it's not the crimes committed on Wall Street,
Edited on Fri Oct-28-11 04:35 PM by SomethingFishy
it's not the income disparity, it's not the fact that people work 80 hours a week and can't afford health insurance, that make America weaker. It's jealousy.

Paul Ryan is what makes America weak. Nasty, lying, selfish, greedy, immoral, slimebags make America weaker. And he is apparently their king.

28. Does it strike anyone else as a bit odd
that one of the most vociferous defenders of Capitalist Markets would admit to knowing absolutely NOTHING about how Capitalist Market systems actually WORK with a statement like that? Class resentment (and the innate, personal desire to be one of the guys "being resented") is the BACKBONE of a Capitalist system.

What Paul Ryan knows about the Free Market is what he has been TOLD he should know about the Free Market, and not one iota more.
