Luke 12:15-21
15 Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.
16 And he spoke a parable to them, saying, The land of a rich man produced plentifully,
17 And he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?’
18 And he said, ‘I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.
19 And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry.'
20 But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?
21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.
Would be interested in hearing the self-righteous conservatives' take on this, but so far haven't seen it come up. Jesus also said something to the effect, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. He also said one cannot serve God and money. Then there was the part about the rich young ruler who cut and ran when Jesus told him to give up all his money and follow him (Jesus).
My guess? The self-righteous conservatives are not true believers, no matter how they claim to be. I'm not much into that mode anymore, but I do find myself wondering on occasion just why God puts up with those who use his name in such reckless fashion. Quite awhile ago I gave up on waiting for an answer, but doesn't keep me from wondering...
Peace.
